Road trip to Florida, please help!
So, we're taking DS to Florida and we plan to drive (ILs bought a new house and DH needs to bring tools). I'm excited, but planning the route is making me nervous.
I know I-95 is the standard route. We have to get to Fort Myers. Since this may be the only time we do this drive, I've been talking it over with DH and my dad to do an alternate route.
I'm thinking of hitting I-66 in DC, then taking that to I-81 south to I-75 south which will take us all the way down to Fort Myers.
While I-95 is a straight shot south, we still need to get over to the other coast. Plus, 95 is a nightmare at times. The accidents, the traffic, yeesh! Plus, we'd get to go through the Smoky Mountains, and hopefully, it's not as "well traveled" as 95 is.
Has anyone ever done this route or know any pros and cons?

I haven't done that route. If you are a AAA member you can go to their office and they will plot a route for you and give you information about traffic, stopping points etc.

When my parents were going to drive down to FL Google Maps and their navi both gave them an alternate route (both gave same exact rte). It took them off I-95 for about an hour. It cut down on the travel time and distance.
ETA: I think it took them off 95 around the DC area.

My parents live just north of Tampa. They take 95 down to Jacksonville and then cut west across the state

my parents came home from florida through 95, to something else in south carolina to 81. they said it was so much better than 95 straight.

Yup, its faster to go around DC then to stay on I-95 and go thru it. It's more miles, but you're going so fast in comparison it's still quicker.
