Rhogam Shot

I know that I have to have one sometime during my second trimester...do you know what week that usually occurs? I am going to the Dr tomorrow, and wanted to ask/remind them, but I was curious what week it is supposed to happen. I will be 22 weeks tomorrow at the appt.

You get it if you are RH - (my blood type is O- so I assume that is why I have it. Not sure if all negatives are RH-, but I know that O- is.

O does not necessarily mean that you are automaticically negative...any blood type can be negative. (I am A-, mom is AB- & sis is B-) My DH is B+ so I am at a higher risk for antibodies..lucky meChat Icon

Re: Rhogam Shot

I just found out yesterday I have to get this. I am B- and DH is A+. Anytime one of you is negative and the other is positive you need to get it according to my doctor. She also said that after birth they test the baby's blood and if it is + then I will get another shot.

Re: Rhogam Shot

INSURANCE COVERAGE AND DOCTORS CARRYING THE RHOGAM ETC

I actually asked my doctor about this on Monday...

If the doctor has the Rhogam in the office you have nothing to worry about..nor do you have a problem with the shot that is required in the hospital after delivery...

Some Doctors dont carry Rhogam in the office and require you to get the Rhogam..it is at that point that the Insurance Companys Rx plan will say that it isnt a covered expense...

My doctor is very old school...and cant believe that some doctors dont carry this for their patients...

Im sure those doctors have their reasons..Being that only 15% of the population is Rh- maybe there isnt all that much of a need for it and perhaps the Rhogam has a short shelf life...

Some of the ladies have a lot of experience in this area...Should this become an issue just send off a thread and you will receive a ton of info.

Re: Rhogam Shot

my OB carried it for my first child, so I got it no problem in the office. For this one (I will have to schedule it after the glucose test btw) I have to fight with insurance for it.

the nurse in my office just told me to call the insurance company and just keep asking for a supervisor until I am approved for the shot.

Re: Rhogam Shot

I had to fight with my insurance company (United healthcare) to get them to cover it. My doctor didnt have it in his office and I went to the pharmacy to fill my prescription. Merck Medco covers my prescriptions and they would only cover rhogam if I ordered it through the mail - which was fine, except they took FOREVER to get it to me. I kept calling and calling and at one point they even said "the prescription was unclear?" so I answered "what is unclear about a prescription for one prefilled syringe?????" Finally I got it the day before my doctor's appointment.

Just give yourself time and expect some headaches - hopefully you wont have any - but definitely give yourself more than a one week window to get the shot.
