Revelation
Since I'm not getting a doggie any time soon (this decade), I've decided that I want to volunteer at a shelter or something like that so I can be with doggies even though they are not mine.
Where do I start? I live in Bethpage.

I would try to locate a local shelter, here are a few I could think of and have info for...
The Little Shelter in Huntington 33 Warner Road Huntington, NY 11743 631-368-8770
North Shore Animal League America 25 Davis Avenue Port Washington, NY 11050 516-883-7575
BIDEAWEE WANTAGH 3300 Beltagh Avenue Wantagh, NY 11793 516-785-4199 - this is teh volunteer and education programs number.

Re: Revelation
I agree with volunteering at the Little Shelter. They have a great facility and they are no-kill, so it offers a different experience.
There are breed-specific rescues on LI, Like the LI Greyhound rescue & placement.
You can also look into Canine Companions. They also use volunteers for the various training and socialisation efforts for their dogs.
