Well it's his business so he can do or charge whatever he wants. If you feel your operating costs are going up for whatever reason, as a business owner you have to pass those costs along to the customers.

Re: Restaurant Owner Adding Obamacare Surcharge
"If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. "Although it may sound terrible that I'm doing this, it's the only alternative. I've got to pass the cost on to the consumer."
Or option 3..go someplace else.
I wouldn't be surprised if he loses a lot of business because of this.

I think he's an idiot & looking for some press.
I think it's shameful that he doesn't provide his employees with health insurance.

I don't mind paying the "5% Obamacare Surcharge" but what I do mind is that he is cutting his employees hours too. That sucks for his employees and will make for a hostile work environment.

He could easily just raise prices like most restaurants do from time to time but instead they are calling it an Obamacare surcharge so it gets people pissed off about the ACA.

Disguisting, and the same for Papa John's. An analysis was done on Papa John's and they determined that giving away free pizza costs the company more than any increases it may see due to Obamacare. Talk about caring about the bottom line more than your employees.

I agree, but to directly state this on the menu is just his attempt at a political statement. Just raise prices 5%. On a typical Denny's/Hurricane's menu item that's about 50 cents. Not a huge deal IMO.

Restaurant Owner Adding Obamacare Surcharge
I think its his business and he's being honest and up front. Good for him. Its all a political crap storm these days but yes the costs DO have to come from somewhere. If those who support it so strongly keep saying its so worth it to them to pay out of pocket to benefit others less fortunate, then this shouldn't be a big deal at all. Its not like its that much more, right?
As far as employees losing jobs due to making up costs.... Thats something that I feel is unavoidable. The economy is rough, blame politics, obama, sandy, gas prices, whatever. Times are tough.
End of the story is.. its HIS place, he can do what he wants and call it whatever he wants. Obama care, kids tuition, etc. if the food is good and its worth it, you pay for it.
I think media makes a big deal because they want to spread negativity towards businesses.

Re: Restaurant Owner Adding Obamacare Surcharge
I see no point in advertising it as such. It won't change anything. If you don't like "Obamacare" that's fine but if he was really serious about changing things he should get active politically and lobby for what he believes in. It's crap and it serves no productive purpose.
He will lose patrons and empoyees too because other businesses feel exactly the other way.
And further, no one knows how much if any it will increase so to make a broad assumption based on no information is absurd. Why he came up with 5% is beyond me. Good luck to him and his business. I hope he doesn't operate his business in a vacuum like that generally.
et: so he is hoping his employees go to their local representatives to lobby about Obamacare? Good luck son.
He's got a lot of competition..I am fine paying a little more for the program in general but I'm not going to pay in his stores. And his employees won't go get a second job, they will go get a 40 hour per week with benefits job from another employer.

Exactly!! Papa John's is doing the same thing but they are raising pizza prices by 14 cents or something but when someone did the math, they would only have to raise it by 5 cents to cover costs. Honestly, I'd pay 14 cents or 5 cents more for crappy pizza if it meant more people being covered but he also wants to cut employee's hours so they wouldn't qualify for healthcare. So, no more Papa John's for this family (not that we got it much anyway although I did love their Parmesan bread sticks!).

that was my thought exactly...NORMALLY a business would just tack their cost hikes into the price of the food. When the cost of flour & grains went up I didn't see "FLOUR SURCHARGE" on my receipt. (although some bagel places posted a notice explaining this was the reason for cost increases)
By titling it "OBAMACARE SURCHARGE" is his way of showing disagreement with a government decision or the president himself and displaying that disapproval in a very obvious way.

Re: Restaurant Owner Adding Obamacare Surcharge
It's a ridiculous publicity stunt. SO much has happened over the years to raise costs on businesses. Gas prices, food prices, etc. every time the minimum wage is raised you don't see business owners charging a "minimum wage surcharge". When restaurants had to install those expensive smoke filtration systems it hurt them and it hurt them again when smoking was banned. The affordable care act is just one of MANY factors to impact a business' bottom line. They'd usually eat the cost, raise prices, or cut elsewhere. Calling it an "obamacare" surcharge is just trying to make a political syStement bc they don't like the president. I'm sure on the scale they work, gas prices and the cost of flour have more impact on the bottom line than this will.

Restaurant Owner Adding Obamacare Surcharge
What annoys me about it is he's planning to cut employees' hours back to 28 hours per week to avoid paying for their healthcare, but is then adding the ridiculously titled surcharge for fines he wouldn't face if he cuts back the hours. I don't mind the raised prices. As a business you do what you have to do. But the treatment of his employees and push of his political beliefs on them and his patrons is what bothers me.
