Responding to their name: When do you start to worry?

My son is 7.5 months old and still doesn't seem to recognize his name. I call to him and he only looks over occasionally. Should I be concerned? When did your baby respond to his or her name regularly?

I don't honestly remember when DS started responding to his name, but I think it was after 7.5 months, so personally, I wouldn't worry.

Sometimes he will respond but usually no. I talk on the phone a lot. I wonder if he just doesnt realize I'm talking to him???

I just did a search for other posts on this topic and it seems that he is a little young to be concerned but I would love some reassurance from others!

I am sure its ok...but I would personally take him to a ped ENT.
The sooner the better if he needs services or something! again..I am sure its fine!
if there is a loud bang--like drop something right behind him-does he turn around?

He still seems young. Even at 21 months when I say "Ava" a few times she sometimes doesn't acknowledge me...can't be bothered. When I say "Ava, look at Mommy" then she turns around and pays attention.Chat Icon

DS was that way. I actually thought he could not hear me as well.

He started responding around that time but on and off.

It got better and well before he was 1 he was responding more and more.

I just threw a book on the floor, pretty loud, and he didn't respond. He has also slept thru the alarm to our house going off and that is LOUD. I have to bring him to the dr. today because he has a virus. Maybe I will mention this while I am there.

My DS knew his name fairly early on. (probably has to do with his sisters saying it a million times a day)...He was around 5 months or so...

With that said though he doesnt always respond....in typical man style he has selective hearing.

Re: Responding to their name: When do you start to worry?

DS starting to repond to his name at around 5 months old.

I would say mention it to the Ped, they may want to have his hearing check

ITA. And DS still has selective hearing. If he wants to ignore me he does. I know he hears me b/c he flinches a little...but if he is playing or occupied...he ignores me. Not a lot, but definitely when he wants to.

Ryan is 5.5 months and has been responding to his name for a few weeks now - at least from what I've noticed. But, I assume this is early on. It def. wouldn't hurt to mention it if you already have an appointment Chat Icon

Do you use nicknames when speaking to or about him (including baby)? Or do you always call him by his name?

I think he's still young to be concerned...but that's what mommies do Chat Icon so if you do use nicknames maybe switch over to using his name so he can start to recognize that it's associate with him.

Not that I think that nicknames are bad...we have them too for DS...but it's a suggestion I remember reading a while back.

Re: Responding to their name: When do you start to worry?

I mentioned at my last appt. that DD was responding to her name a lot of the time (she was 6.5 months then) and my ped said she doesn't even ask about that until 9 months old, so I wouldn't be worried just yet.

Re: Responding to their name: When do you start to worry?

Well I asked the doc today and we are having his ears checked but he said that he would be shocked if that was the reason. he said my son should be responding by now but the fact the he doesn't respond isn't cause for concern just yet. Still, I got the feeling from his demeanor that he was a little more concerned than he let on.

I know he can hear, I yelled boo at him earlier from behind and he started crying (I am a mean mommy). He really just has no idea what his name is. He is on target with everything else though so I guess I will try to keep my fears at bay for a couple of more months. I would love to hear from anyone that had a baby that started responding at 8 months or later......

Thanks everyone who has responded so far. I really appreciate it.

Re: Responding to their name: When do you start to worry?

my son was masively speech delayed, he didn't respond to his name until i think closer to his second birthday, and even then it was sporadic. heck, now at 5.5 he still only does it sometimes. but thats just him ignoring me. LOL.

we did years of EI and CPSE, and 3 years of spcecial ed preschool to hep with his language. as of yesterday he started kindergarten with NO services at all. he was full discharged as of august this year.

so not necessarily a worry, but some kids just take longer than others to get there.

as a side note, my 10 month old daughter does turn when i call her name, enough of the time for me to know she understands her name. but i can't say for sure when she started to do it, maybe 4-8 weeks ago.

I think I posted the same thing right around 7.5 months. Sometime between the post and now (9 months), he started to respond to his name regularly.

After posting, I realized we didn't use his name routinely. We called him all these nicknames too, so I told DH we needed to start using his name consistently. I also clapped and made a fuss when he did respond to his name.

Both my kids sleep through our house alarm. I think when they sleep deeply it takes a lot to wake them.
