repost from parenting - stranger danger tips
My Boyfriends son got this home from school the other day and I thought it would be good to share. It was issued by the NC Police Dept.
My DD is only 4 but I am going to sit down and have a conversatio with her about this, its scary. Hope these tips help...
Stranger Danger Tips -
1. talk to your children about stranger danger, practice a plan.
2. be sure you know where your children are at all times, and when they are supposed to return home.
3. Knows your childs friends, where they live, and how to get a hold of them if needed.
4. Let your child know where you are and how they can get in touch with you.
5. Discuss with your child who they can contact in case of an emergency.
6. Discuss with your child the route they should take home or use when traveling and not change the route without notifying you first.
7. Duscuss safe places they should go if a stranger approches. (businesses, neighbors, etc)
8. Discourage children from playing in "secret" areas, abandoned buildings, empty lots or yards..
9. Create a buddy system when traveling or playing. Teach them to work together to idenify stranger danger situations and what their response should be. Never leave a child home or in a car alone.
10. Teach children that some peoiple will smile and make promises in effort to get thr child to let their defenses down. Teach your child to not be fooled!
11. teach them to tell "get away from me, your not my parents"
12. Teach children to stay away from strangers, create a safety zone for themselves, run away and tell someone.
13. Teach children to never go near strangers cars. Discuss with them the scenerios they might encounter "want some candy" "help me look for my puppy' "et in, Ill give you a ride" "your parents told me to pick you up"

Another good one is to never label anything with their name where it can be seen. That way a stranger won't know their name.
