Renting a car and car seats - question
This may be a silly question, but when you rent a car at an airport and also rent car seats, do they install the car seats at the rental center, or do they just give them to the parents and expect them to install them?

Renting a car and car seats - question
The one time we rented a carseat with the rental car, they installed them for us. I double checked it to make sure it was installed correctly.
ETA - We rented from Hertz.

We installed ours. IMO you should always know how to install a seat for reasons such as this.
This is why I do not believe on relying on the car seat install places. Yes they can tell you if its correct but you should be able to do it yourself.
Also you do not know who the person at the retal place is and if they are qualified.

A certified car seat installer should always make sure you know how to properly install the seat and you should always be the last one to touch your seat at an install.
OP- does your child/children have their own seat on the plane? If so you can just bring your own seat for them. Personally I wouldnt trust car seats from rental places. They could be expired, could have been involved in an accident (99% of manufacturers require replacement af ter ANY accident no matter how minor because of possible damage that may not be able to be seen by the eye) they could have "cleaned" the straps unsafely (wiped the straps with something other then water and mild soap which jeopardizes the integrity of the straps) and then theres the germ/disgusting factor if the seats are peed or thrown up in.

ITA! When you have your seat installed you should be taught how to do and actually install it. Also I wouldn't use a seat with unknown history. You just have no idea if it's been in an accident, been cleaned in a damaging way.

Re: Renting a car and car seats - question
Thanks all!
We both know how to install the seats, although admittedly, my DH does it all the time, not me. We both have been to Hassell to learn how to install them correctly.
My main concern was dealing with two kids and putting luggage away, all while my DH installs the seats. At least I know to expect a little extra time at the car rental place for the install before we get on the road.
We did consider bringing our own seats. But due to many factors for this trip, we opted to rent this time.

I would never rent a seat, you have no idea how it was treated, if it was in a fender bender, etc. Not to mention, I've seen some of the rental seats, and they don't look clean.

I always rent a seat.
ALWAYS
Yes, we install it ourselves in the rental. They've always been perfectly clean and easy to install and for whatever time we are where ever we are its been a HUGE BENEFIT.
ETA: with AAA its generally free as well
