Removing Mold

This is gross.

We bought a new house, and we're not living in it yet, just going back and forth and doing some work on it before moving in.

This week, DH noticed there were some moldy spots on the carpet in the basement. They weren't there when we closed, and we weren't sure of the best way to remove them without staining the carpet. Just soap and water? Also, does anyone know if there are products you can use to treat the carpet so these don't keep sprouting?

There doesn't appear to be water underneath, the carpet is dry, so we were guessing it's moisture from the basement, though who knows? Anyone have this problem?

TIA for sharing any solutions!

You can buy antifungal sprays and cleaners. Mold usually means that you have a wet basement. There may be some leaks with a heavy rain. I would invest in a dehumidifier ASAP and keep an eye out for wet spots after a heavy rain.

Thanks! Yeah, I am hoping it doesn't mean there is water in the basement, but it's possible that there is some. We'll probably get a spray for now and a dehumidifier soon.

It's gross--I keep expecting to see mushrooms down there one day. It doesn't smell musty down there at all, but I suppose it doesn't have to.
