registering a car in NY?
DH is from out of town and his car is still registered in another state because hiis mom's name and address is on the loan and all the paperwork. We're selling the car in NY. How much of a pain is the paperwork going to be to register the car in NY? Can we even do that since his mom is on it and her address is out of state? How much does this cost? I think it would be easier for the buyer to just get the registration changed rather than us change it and then change it to the buyer. Can someone explain to me the time and cost involved and where I should begin?

Re: registering a car in NY?
You may have found this info already but I found a page on DMV about reigstering cars.
DMV registration
If the car is in his mom's name you might have to fill out the paperwork as if she was selling the car. I would think you shoudn't have to register it here first. That should be the responsiblity of the new owner. HTH

Thanks. I found that page... just wondering if anyone knows how long this process takes. Is it just a one day thing? or does it take weeks/months?

Re: registering a car in NY?
my parents put my car in their names. it was leased. the lease was paid off. we went to the dmv to put the car in my name. turns out that my parents had to register the car in their names. took about 4 weeks. then when the car was registered in their name we went back to get the car registered in my name. had temporary registration. my official registration came in the mail about 4 weeks later.

Re: registering a car in NY?
Thanks.
Now, what about all those people who buy cars on ebay from other states? Don't you forfeit the registration when you sell it and the new seller must register the car immediately in the place they reside? If that's the case, shouldn't it not matter where the car is currently registered and has license plates from?

You don't have to re-register or re-title the car in NY. However, your mom has to be the one to sign over the title (she keeps the registration and the license plates - the new owner registers and gets their own plates in the state in which they reside). Make sure your mom scrapes off any stickers on the windshield (registration, inspection, etc) before she gives the car to the new owner.

I am not sure what this has to do with your question?
I bought a car in michigan- and we had the temp paper plate and no registration when we drove it home- we went to the DMV in NY and registered and paid the rest of the sales tax
your issue- is that you don't technically own that car- I think your best bet is to have your MIL sign it over to your DH - have him register it in NY and then you can sell it no problem
we were trying to sell a car registered in NY - my in my DH Grandma's name- and we just needed a notorized letter saying we could sell it - we traded it in
