Refridgerated Breastmilk...

I have a bottle in the fridge that is 4 days old today. How long can BM last in the fridge? Can I put it in the freezer to store it after it has been in the fridge for four days? TIA Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Refridgerated Breastmilk...

They say 3 days is tops in the frig but I would use it today and not after that.

Re: Refridgerated Breastmilk...

I have read everything from 2-8 days (the 8 day one came from a reputable source - although I forget where...maybe medela?)

I think you are fine freezing it or using it. I am sure I went 4 days before freezing a few times.

Ok, thanks. I would hate to throw it away, that stuff is like liquid gold! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I will feed her that today, then pump after I give it to her and store that in the freezer. How long can BM stay in the freezer?

Re: Refridgerated Breastmilk...

here are some lists I found:

http://familydoctor.org/828.xml
How long can I store my breast milk?
The following are some general breast milk storage guidelines:

At room temperature (less than 77°F) for 4 to 8 hours
At the back of a refrigerator for 3 to 8 days
At the back of a freezer for up to 3 months

Dr. Sears says 8 days:
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T026900.asp#T026901
In a refrigerator 32-39 degrees F 0-4 degrees C 8 days

LLL says 8 is ok too
http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/milkstorage.html

Human milk can be stored

at room temperature (66-72°F, 19-22°C) for up to 10 hours
in a refrigerator (32-39°F, 0-4°C) for up to 8 days
in a freezer compartment inside a refrigerator (variable temperature due to the door opening frequently) for up to 2 weeks
in a freezer compartment with a separate door (variable temperature due to the door opening frequently) for up to 3 to 4 months.
in a separate deep freeze (0°F, -19°C) for up to 6 months or longer.
