Reflux or sensitivity to something I'm eating?

My DD has been having a hard time with feedings lately. She is EBF and during feedings, she has been sucking for a little while and then she will start crying. I will stop to burp her and she will have a big burp and then she eats for a little while longer and then cries again and the cycle keeps going on and on. She seems so uncomfortable when she eats. She only spits up occasionally. She definitely has alot of gas though, she has many big burps during feeding, and then I find she will still burp hours later. She also has the hiccups alot, and sometimes coughs. She is only upset/fussy, she is fine once the feeding is done and is happy for most other parts of the day. Does this sound like reflux, extreme gassiness, or a reaction to something that I am eating?

Also, if it's something that I am eating, wouldn't it bother her after a feeding after her body finishes and processes it? How would a food affect her so quickly while she is eating?

She is still gaining plenty of weight and is happy at all other parts of the day so I'm not sure if it's just something we deal with and she will grow out of.

I would maybe try cutting out some foods that could possibly trigger gas....that is what the doc told us

It could be something you ate. Try to stay away from gassy foods. She also could just have gas. My DS used to spit up a lot in the beginning. It's not as bad as it seems. Sometimes it could be that they are eating too quickly too.

My DD had the same problems and my doctor said it was a milk protein allergy, which I am now beginning to doubt bc there was no definitive test, but I am afraid to test it out by eating dairy bc I don't want her to get sick! Make an appointment with a pediatric gastro to rule this out and find out if it is reflux. There are some medications that really help some babies with bad reflux. Good luck! Chat Icon

I had similar issues with both my babies. With Yael, I've determined it's (1) gas, and (2) a sensitivity to dairy. I started using Mylicon drops after each feeding for the gas, and OMG, it has helped SO much with the gas.

To determine whether she had a sensitivity to what I was eating, I basically cut out EVERYTHING for a week, dairy, caffeine, chocolate, citrus fruits, tomatoes, garlic, onion. And then slowly I reintroduced each food and watched Yael closely to see if she had any kind of reaction. She's fine with most of what I eat, except chocolate and dairy. The dairy seems to trigger some reflux issues with her, so I avoid it at all costs.

A sensitivity to what you are eating will appear within 2-8 hours after you've eaten Chat Icon

I could have written your post because my little guy has the same issues, except that he does spit up alot too. Part of my problem is that I have a vary fast letdown and heavy milk flow so he has to guzzle to keep up. He unlatches and cries which leads to all of the gas. Im also wondering if it could also be a food sensitivity or reflux on top of this.

I had this too in the beginning. If you have a pump, it helps to pump just a little before you feed him, it will make the letdown less forceful. Alternatively, try feeding him on top of your boob - that way the milk doesn't gush into his mouth.
