Reflux
DS is going for an Upper GI Series on Thursday. Can someone explain to me what exactly reflux is and how its treated? If he has this is it something he will have for the rest of his life? TIA

Re: Reflux
Dd had reflux but never went to a gastro- her ped diagnosed it. She was on zantac until about 11 months old.
Her symptoms were: constant spitting up crying and arching her back while feeding hiccups gagging and coughing when you laid her down on her back
I am not sure how to explain exactly what it is but basically it is a flap that is supposed to close but doesn't so stuff comes back up. It can burn and make them hurt. Hope this helps.

Re: Reflux
DD was diagnosed with reflux at 4 weeks old
She was arching her back/screaming during eating Lots of hiccups Crying/screaming when we laid her down flat I also heard the reflux, then she screamed.
Our PED diagnosed her.
She was on Pepcid, then that didn't work, and we are now on Prevacid.
She is 7 months old, and I tried to stop for a couple days, and she still has the reflux, so back on Prevacid she went.
Our doc told us most babies grow out of it by 6 months old, with the worst time being 2-3 months old. He also said some babies don't grow out of it until up to year or so. But I was told they do grow out of it, once the flap over their tummy fully matures and doesn't allow the acid to back up.

Re: Reflux
oh and just an fyi, if they do a barium swallow test (where your child has to drink the liquid and then they watch it thru the xray to see it come) it is possible that it will be totally negative.
reflux has to occur at that VERY MOMENT in order to see something. With hannah, she had a totally fine barium swallow, but it is so obvious that she suffers from acid reflux disease (gerd). a better diagnostic but more intrusive test is the 24hr ph probe. or an endoscopy, but that is a "last resort" test in my opinion.

Re: Reflux
Thanks so much for your replies. How do you hear the reflux? What does it sound like?

It's hard to describe with words. But Gianna had silent reflux like Hannah, (no spit up), but it made this sound.
Kinda like a hiccup that you swallow, or that stays in the throat, like a bloop sound.
Like say "Blooop", something like that sound.
Does that make sense?
