Refinish or Replace Stairway?

Does anyone have any experience with Refinishing their staircase that previously had carpet?

Also, has anyone ever replaced an entire staircase? If so, what was your experience and what company did you use?

Re: Refinish or Replace Stairway?

DH did our stairs by himself and with some of my dad's help. They were originally covered by a rug. We saved probably 2/3 of the cost of what it would have been for someone to come and do them for us. But it took a long time bc we both work.

Here is our stair experience.

We replaced our stairs because the angle wasn't up to code and we felt like we kept tripping on them. We paid $1500 for someone to come measure and custom-build the set, I think, but DH and BIL installed them. We used a company in Medford, near the railroad station.

I think they are HB Millwork-we went to them as well to check it out. Very helpful people.

We completely replaced the stairs in our entry way of a high ranch. About 5 or 6 stairs going up and about 4 going down.

After we took up the carpeting, we were going to refinish the stairs, but since we ended up replacing the old wrought iron banister with a new wooden one, we just had our guys do the whole stairs. It took them a few hours and looks great!

We refinished ours. We ripped up the carpet, had to remove thousands of staples, then we had a company come & sand & stain, because ours were bleached under the carpet.
We sanded down the spindles and painted them white ourselves. It was very tedious, but if it saves money it's worth is sometimes.
