Red food coloring
I need to make some red velvet cupcakes tomorrow night and need a lot of liquid red food coloring.
Anyone know where I can go to buy it where it's not in the tiny little squirt bottle? I wanted to find it where I can just buy red and not have to buy it in a package with all the colors. The recipe I need it for calls for 6 tbsp.

Maybe Grandma's Candy Kitchen in Wantagh or The Chocolate Duck in Farmingdale?

Re: Red food coloring
Target or any grocery store sells the big red food coloring. I get it there all the time when I make my red velvet cupcakes.

Michael's - in their baking section. You can but the jars of Wilton colors which are way more potent and vibrant than the liquid dyes in the stores. Get the NO TASTE RED. Image Attachment(s):

I have the Wilton gel no taste red already. I just wasn't sure how much to use or how it would affect the recipe since I've never made it before. Like I said, it calls for 6 Tbsp of liquid color so that's a lot of liquid to remove from the recipe.

Re: Red food coloring
go with the McMormick red food coloring..you can find it in any supermarket baking aisle (Target and walmart should have it too!).
if the recipe calls for liquid, stick with liquid. i wouldnt play around with the wilton gel color (plus you'd have to use a lot of the gel & even though it says "no taste" red...it'll change the taste.)

In my defense, I've never made it before!

Well, if you buy a box mix, it is already going to be red for you (I am assuming since I've never made a box mix for red velvet)
If you are making it from scratch, you need the red food coloring to turn the cake red!

Re: Red food coloring
I've used the Wilton before and it worked out well. Didn't alter the taste or the texture.
Not that it's likely to help you this time....but for next time! (I have a great recipe for red velvet if you ever want it!)
