if you plan to edit your footage, go with a hard drive or mini dv camera.
DVD interface is not as friendly to edit as the two named above...
Zoom you will typically find 20x zoom (don't worry about the ditigal zoom as you shouldn't be using it)
Only thing really different is the lens... Sony and Canon are better then say JVC's and other companies...

I have the older version and love it. Yes, you cannot edit on the camera itself but I use Adobe Elements to edit after the fact.

We have a sony with a built in HD. We also bought an extra battery with a european charger for vacations...
I highly recommend getting one with the highest optical zoom and biggest HD within your budget.
Also, go onto cnet.com and read through all the professional reviews. Once you find one you like, read all the customer reviews (they tell the real dirt on a product). we did this and were very happy with what we got

The two models above (the sony and canon) are great.
I own a old Sony which is still kicking... and i brought my sister the Canon for my sister...
