Re: Recommend your pet insurance
We had VPI I liked it, it covered a lot- not the whole bill but a decent percentage you could pick different levels of coverage too depending on how much you wanted to spend each month etc
I got it when my cat's were kittens and it was relatively inexpensive. But each year it would go up and finally it was like $400 a year for each cat and I said forget it. The older the animal the more it will cost you. Sad part is, we barely used it when we had it, then once I dropped it becuase it was too expensive, my male cat got really sick and i spent like $1000 in vet bills with no coverage

Trupanion--they do not have an age limit for enrollment. They cover 90% of the cost for injury and illness after you meet your deductible. They do not cover well visits or vaccinations.

We have trupanion and have been very happy with their insurance coverage.
I believe you can get insurance for a dog that is 6, it just won't cover pre-existing conditions.

Pet plan. I have 100% reimbursement with $200 annual deductible. No issues i LOVE it. Pays for itself. Mine is $100 a month but my dog has a seizure disorder, for the most part well controlled but when we can't stop them at home she gets admitted to the hospital on IVs for an overnight/ 24 hour stay which is over $3k each time. Well worth it. I should add she's a pure bred dachshund so her premium is higher (goes based on age, breed etc) I'm responsible for her well visit yearly. I believe they cover some vaccines if the bill is over $200

I agree with Trupanion but would like to add that they pay you back 90% of WHAT YOU ACTUALLY PAID. They do not use fee schedules which many pet insurance companies do. Meaning, for example, some companies will pay/reimburse you lets say $75 for stitches which is all well and good if you live in the middle of no where where that's what a vet might charge. Here on LI, just like everything else, vet prices are significantly higher. Stitches here might cost $300, so you'll get back 90% of that, or $270 rather than the fee schedule amount.

I had VPI and had major problems getting them to pay. Waste of money.
Take what you would pay for the insurance and put it in a piggy bank. That way you need it for emergency you have the money. And then if you dont use it - you still have it instead of throwing it away.

While I never had an issue with VPI and they always paid me promptly I do agree with this. We paid for years on our one cat who never needed a vet visit..what a waste. I feel the same way about oil burner contracts. Put the money you would have paid for the contract away and use it should you need to call someone . If not at least you didn't throw it away

Healthy Paws. We cover for 90%. It does NOT cover the vet visit, but it does any other emergency, medicine, operation, xrays etc.

We have Healthy Paws as well. I wish it covered the vet visits, but otherwise we have never had a problem being reimbursed, and they do it pretty quickly. We just take a picture of the Vet bill using their app and submit it that way.
We also cover for the 90%. I like having it, because we don't hesitate to take our pup to the vet (and shes kind of a disaster )

We have Banfield, its through PetSmart and love it. The only thing we've had to pay for is the Heartworm medicine and the lampshade when he got neutered
