Re: Recommend your insect repellent for kids big and small

I thought the only stuff that was safe was that Avon Skin so Soft b/c it doesnt contain the usual chemicals insect repellants contain. It's not really an insect repellant but supposably it works. I haven't tried it on DS though.

we don't go outside after dark, so there is no issue with getting eaten up.

I bought some Burt's Bees bug repellent. It smells really good and is all natural. I found it at the Christmas Tree Shop in Deer Park, but I am sure it is at other stores that have Burt's Bees.

We use the California Baby one. It works well, though we're not in a very buggy area.

We used California Baby bug repellent. It smells good and is DEET free. However, you need to reapply it pretty often. Basically, if you can't smell it, it's no longer effective.

However, the after using it a few times, my DD's skin started to break out into hives. My DD has really sensitive, dry, eczema-prone skin though. I'm going to try the Burt's Bee's and see if that's any better.

Other than that, unless it's too hot, I try to keep my daughter in long pants and tops in we're going to be in a buggy area.

Re: Recommend your insect repellent for kids big and small

I am highly allergic to pyrethrin and some other ingredients that are in insecticides. I also get a very bad reaction to bug bites. There is not a great answer for me and I do not want my son exposed to the things that I am allergic to. I used Skin So Soft oil on myself and my son this summer. I used the one that does not contain anything except SSS. It only worked a little bit. Years ago I used those repellent bracelets. They do contain the ingredient that I am allergic to but I felt that it was better than applying it directly to my skin. I may look for them again. I would love to hear of any other solutions for these darn "skeeters."

We started using California Baby about a month ago - its all natural. So far, it is working well. DS has sensitive skin and hasn't had any reaction to it so far.

When I was on LI last week my poor son got a bite on his foot, which got infected, off to the doctors for a course of antibiotics. Next NIGHT IN THE HOUSE, 3 mosquito bites...the kid had Avon Skin So Soft on...obviously didn't work. Fast forward to the following week, the kid got a bite on his thigh...his thigh BLOWS UP and it purple and red, another trip to the doctor...apparently not infected, but gross nonetheless...

Moral of the story...well there is none, but man, you gots the worst mosquitoes on LI...I am glad to be back in freezing moasquito less England!!!

Nothing, my son had a reaction to Skin So Soft. But he has skin issues so it's not really a surprise.

I'm thinking about ordering this and giving it a try, according to the testimonials it works well. We use the shampoo on him and he's not had a reaction. Rosemary Repel Leave in Spray

OH NO, Poor Noah. This is what happens to Clover too. Our mosquitoes have been sooooo bad this year all day long not just in the evening.

I never really see any mosquitos during the day. We are out all day long, just sunscreen, no bug spray. I dont think shes ever been bitten by a bug of any kind. And her bedtime is 7:30 so we are usually indoors by 6ish. I have naturapel from BRU but honestly, I rarely use it.
