Realtor question

So Dh and I are kind of all over the place with towns we are looking to buy our first house in. We're looking at Merrick, RVC, parts of Malverne, parts of VS, and parts of Lynbrook. It's not that we can't decide where to live but we're open to all of those towns if it's the right house.

Should we be using a realtor who is familiar with those towns or would a realtor who works in just one of those areas be good enough?

Re: Realtor question

I think you are better off working with one realtor consistently, versus using a different one for each area or town you are interested in (even if they are a little spread out).

Ideally, you want to work with a realtor who is familiar with the area you are looking in -- that way, they are on top of the inventory, and they can advise you well about neighborhoods and schools and things of that nature. Also, if a realtor is active in a particular area, they have relationships with the other realtors in the area, which can help (since any realtor you work with will -- or should -- show you listings whether or not they are their own listings).

But if your realtor knows western Nassau really well (Lynbrook, VS, RVC), for example, then there's no reason they can't help you in Merrick, too. First of all, they are not really that spread out... I do most of my work on the south shore and in central Nassau, but that encompasses a lot of towns. And I have worked with customers and am currently working with customers who are looking in Suffolk, even.

The main thing is to find someone with whom you feel comfortable, and someone who will provide the assistance you need. And it's easier to do that if you have an ongoing relationship with one person who gets to know your needs and wants instead of striking up new relationships with new realtors every time you branch out with your search. Also, if you show loyalty to a realtor, and they feel confident you will buy from them, that realtor will work harder for you and go out of their way for you more than if they think you are running around with different realtors. No realtor wants to invest hours and weeks and months of time working with someone only to find out that they buy through someone else (in that case, the realtor gets nothing for all of their time and work!).

Good luck with your search! If your realtor is not familiar with Merrick, feel free to ask me any questions... I live and work in Bellmore and am very familar with Merrick.
