Real Estate Agents: Good and Bad about your career?

I am looking to totally change fields and I've always wondered about doing real estate. I know it's a lot of weekend work but I feel like it's a better job for a new mother, rather than a full time 15 hour/day job commuting to NYC!

I am an attorney so I can get my brokers license too. How hard is it to break in since there are so many agents on LI? What do you love and hate about your job? Thanks!

Pros:
-I work from home
-Make my own hours
-Get to meet new people everyday!
-Great commission!

Cons:
-Cold Calling (if necessary)
-Its alot of work, you wont have a real following for about a year or two
-You work strictly on commission - in essence, you work for free until the closing!
-Working weekends (but you get used to that)

I got into real estate when DH and I first got engaged because I knew that when we had kids, I wanted to be able to be home with them when they were sick or if I wanted to go to a school play or soccer game I didnt want to have to beg my boss for the day off. I didnt want to miss those moments. I LOVE MY JOB!!! But i'm not gonna lie to you, its hard at first. You just have to keep in mind that nothing in life comes easy and if you stick to it, you will make a ton of money!

thanks very much for the advice

how long did it take you to sell your first house? do you have to have some kind of "mentor" in the beginning to follow around? can you just go into a real estate broker shop and say you want to work there?
