RCCL
Someone posted a while back about boycotting Aruba because Natalee's Mother asked travelers to do so.
What about cruises? (Specifically in the wake of the missing honeymooner---George Smith IV.)
Does anyone feel less safe? Feel RCCL should be doing more to help this family?

Re: RCCL
My sister just went to Aruba in December with her 6 month old and another couple who are pregnant. They felt safe and fine.
I don't think that Aruba overall is unsafe. I think the parents just want to boycott Aruba because she claims the police aren't doing enough to solve the crime and she doesn't want Aruba to benefit from US tourist dollars.
The reality of the matter is that what happened to Natalie could have happened anywhere. When a young woman leaves her friends and wanders off with a strange guy, there is a potential for danger. Its sad, but true. Even going back to a strange guy's apartment can be dangerous. Poor Natalie.

Re: RCCL
I understand what you are saying. The Natalee comment was just sort of a side note. My real question was how people felt about cruises after the mysterious disappearance of a man recently.

Re: RCCL
I wouldn't worry too much... I don't know much about that situation, and I have never been on a cruise, but because 1 man disappeared, I don't think that in itself is a reason not to do it. Just use a reputable company and have fun!

Re: RCCL
Did you hear about the other girl stolen off a RCCL ship docked in Aruba? It happened back when they let locals come on the ship and preform. Her family still thinks she is alive and has been spotted a few times living in horrible conditions. I saw it on Dr. Phil. When she disapeared instead of the Captain putting out an alert he thought it would scare the other guests and RCCL really did nothing but tell the family to get off at the next stop. It was a very sad story and in my POV worse then Natalee's story since the girl was on vacation with her family. It was also in a few magazines back in the day during all the Shandra Levy stuff.. You may be able to search it.

Posted by Kelly My real question was how people felt about cruises after the mysterious disappearance of a man recently.
I've only been on one cruise, the Majesty of the Seas (an older ship) RCCL, and it was for 3 days to the Bahamas.
If there aren't security cameras around already, I think it would be a good idea to have them. Especially outside. If there was ever a fight on an isolated part of the ship- what's to stop someone from throwing you overboard?
Thats just my own paranoia talking though, I never felt unsafe on the cruise.

I agreed with Shelley's post below this one. I am going to Aruba in a few weeks. Like Shelley said what happened to Natalie unfortunately can happen anywhere...... And as far as the cruise, I'd still take a cruise...I think they are great fun and I've never felt not safe in any of them..... With that case...I think there's more that still has not come to light.......

Re: RCCL
I msut say that I hav been on several cruises and nto once ever thought that my saftey was compromosed. Things happen so often everywhere everyday that dont make the headlines. All in all I gues I never let my guard down and just live and vacation normally if htat makes any sense.

Re: RCCL
I have been on a cruise since the HM disapearance ( i went on Radisson but Im sure security is the same on all ships) and did not feel unsafe at all and we had a balcony room too, yea if you are drunken stupper stay off the balcony or near the rails of the ship for that matter, and about the amy story, I heard it, just do yourself a favor and stay with someone who you are on vacation with at all times if you plan to go to the nightclub on board or bar and drink. Its all about safety and making the smart decision, some people b/c they are on vacation throw safety out the door but you have to be on guard 24-7 no matter where you are. Dont worry have a wonderful time and you will LOVE ARUBA too!!!

Re: RCCL
I have been on 6 Carnvial Cruises, 1 Celebrity and 1 Royal Caribbean.
I never felt unsafe..but looking back I realize that Celebrity wasn't all that safe...I witnessed 3 girls going into the crew quarters...apparently there was a lack of security there because that is not allowed...also we went out dancing one night with some of the crew...I don't think that is allowed either.
DH and I went on RC for our Honeymoon...and we spotted alot of things that we didn't think was safe or right...but since I was with DH I felt safe.
no problems ever with Carnival that I can think of.

Re: RCCL
I'm going on a Southern Caribbean Cruise on RCCL this October and ti goes to Aruba. I've been to Aruba about 4 times and I always felt like it was safe. I always thought the cruise lines had great security. I don't think it will change my mind...I'm going to be with my DH and another couple...plus we don't put ourselves in dangerous situations, like leaving the main area where the ships are. You're in a different country, you have to be careful...

That's the kind of thing I think about and then DH looks at me like I'm nuts. But I figure, yeah, it COULD happen. I think of lots of crazy what-if scenarios. I'm just paranoid like that.
That being said, I just went on a cruise and didn't really feel concerned for my safety.

George was actually my friend's college BF. It breaks my heart that his poor family STILL doesnt know what happened to him I really dont think I would go on a cruise on RCCL bc of it. ETA: not bc i feel unsafe bc i dont think many of us would have put ourselves in as precarious a situation as George did. i think RCCL completely mishandled it fr the beginning and it makes me sick.
