Raccoon proof garbage cans?
My dumbazz neighbor has lidless cans and their trash is strewn around all the time, pretty much every morning so now we seem to get more raccoons than we ever did in 7 years, it's so annoying. I guess they enjoy cleaning it up every day? DH read that they can open the locking latches on the crappy Rubbermaid ones. Home Depot & local Ace seem to just have the same old stuff, those Rubbermaid ones have handles that are supposedly locking latches and wheels but they don't do the trick & the lids are awful. And of course they don't sell replacement lids alone. (scam!)
Where did you get good garbage cans that can keep out the raccoons?

they are such scary little creatures!
my mom has those stretchy cords (forget what they are called) she hooks one side through one handle , pulls cord across lid and hooks through other handle. racoons haven't been able to take it off

Re: Raccoon proof garbage cans?
We keep our garbage cans stored in one of these on the side of the house. No issues at all.
This doesn't remedy the problem of the raccoon's getting into your garbage at the curb though.

Re: Raccoon proof garbage cans?
We used to use a Bungee Cord on our pail. Hook it on the handle on the pail to the handle to the cover. They can knock it down, but cant get the cover open. They work great.

Re: Raccoon proof garbage cans?
The racoons in our neighborhood figured out how to take the bungee cord off of our garbage...seriously
We had them "barricaded" behind our bbq, but now that it is cold and we are putting our bbq in the garage, I'm not sure what we are going to do

Re: Raccoon proof garbage cans?
we have raccoon proof lids. I think DH got them at our local hardware store. they have the regular locked handles, but the a small hook attaches the lid to the handle.

Re: Raccoon proof garbage cans?
We tried one where the lid was attached in the back to the garbage pail but our problem is more the garbage men THROWING and breaking my garbage pails

I keep my cans in the garage until garbage day.

I can't stand when neighbors don't put the tops on! There are racoons everywhere!
I bought the rubbermaid ones with the bungee cord on the top to secure to the side handles. I think it's a PITA for the garbage men but it has worked. No more dumped cans. I bought them last year at Ace.

I was gonna ask what the garbagemen think... ours already hate us, can't imagine what they'll think of it. But we have raccoons and stray cats around now, we have to do something.
