I think I did the same. I also gave him lunch - he was here all day. He was very thankful for the tip.

You dont have to tip. If people starts tiping others for everything then we will always worry about tiping.whats next tiping our inlaws for making dinner for when we visit? Somethings are best left with a simple thank-you.

My DH is a Fios tech and technically they dont have to be tipped. They are providing a service.
While unnecessary it is still a nice little extra thank for a job well done or for him going that extra yard to ensure a quality service and install.
He suggested if you wanted to tip it's up to you on what you feel is a good tip. He has gotten anywhere from 20 - 30 on a tip

I agree that you don't have to tip. I made a decision to, based on a variety of things. I'm not going to tell anyone that they should or shouldn't. But I'm not going to stop because someone else doesn't do it.
And we actually will bring something to dinners with family, whether it be a bottle of wine or a homemade dessert or just flowers. If you want to call it a tip, sure ok. I just call it being nice and another way for me to thank someone for hosting us.
I won't judge you for not tipping if you don't judge me for tipping.
