Quick pumping question

How do you know if you are pumping long enough to get the hindmilk?

My ped said to give ds 3-4 oz every 3-4 hrs when I pump. So far i have been able to get about 2 oz in 10 min & then the flow kind of slows down.

Is it ok to pump 10 min on each side to get the 4 oz or should I try to get it all from one side? TIA

Re: Quick pumping question

I just pump around 10-15 mins.. and if my DD is hungry i will try and have her bf after pumping to see if she gets the fatty milk.. that way i know shes getting...

I figure if the breast is really soft and no or very very little milk coming out of breast then i have most of it.

Re: Quick pumping question

The milk that drips (rather than flows)out is the hindmilk. It's also creamier/thicker than the foremilk. If you time your pumping sessions rather than just pump from on side until empty you run the risk of getting 4 ounces of foremilk.

i'm not sure, sorry... but i would say that you should try to pump each breast to completion so you are sure to get the hindmilk. i've read that you should keep pumping for 2-5 minutes after the flow stops to be sure you got everything.

I mentioned "hindmilk" to my LC who said that too much emphasis is placed on this. She said don't worry about it, as long as the baby is getting the milk, any milk is good. HTH.

I guess LCs are like Drs, they each have their opinions. Even though milk is milk, my LC explained that the reason the hindmilk is so important is that it's what keeps the baby full as well as helps the baby to get every bit of the nutrients from the BM.

Foremilk alone moves very quickly through the system and will cause green poops if digested without hindmilk (that was how I knew I had too much foremilk-DD had green poops all the time).

ITA. I used to pump until I had no more milk.

Re: Quick pumping question

I have just started pumping - been 2 days. I am pumping just the left breast because the nipple is really sore and it hurts too much when the baby is on it. So I am trying to at least pump the left breast and continue the milk production and have the baby breastfeed directly on the right breast.

Is there a limit to how long I should pump on my left breast at a time? I would love to get as much out of it as possible but I am also trying to make sure to not make the nipple more sore.
I have been able to pump at least 20 min on it for now. Can I do more?

TIA!
