Quick Grammar Question
Which is the correct placement of the comma after the article title (inside or outside the quotation marks)?
1. "Sample Article Title", written by John Doe, can be found in the magazine.
2. "Sample Article Title," written by John Doe, can be found in the magazine.
TIA!

Re: Quick Grammar Question
Example: That Time magazine article, “Your Brain on Drugs,” was fascinating. Note that the word “magazine” was not italicized because that is not part of the actual name of the publication.

Re: Quick Grammar Question
#1 is the correct way. The comma doesn't need to be in quotes.

I agree with this. The comma is not part of the title of the article and should not be in quotes.

Re: Quick Grammar Question
Seeing all of the different responses, I don't feel so silly now! I went with #2. My boss is a stickler for proper grammar, so let's see if he comes back to me with a slap on the wrist. Thanks everyone!

Re: Quick Grammar Question
I thought American-style was to always put the comma inside the quotation mark?

Re: Quick Grammar Question
Americans rules dictate that #2 is correct. British rules say #1 is correct. As long as you and your boss are American, #2 is correct....

Re: Quick Grammar Question
I'll defer to the English teachers, but I must say, #2 looks quite odd to me
I always thought the title of the article should be in quotes and no other part of the sentence should be included.... therefore, the comma should be outside the quotes becuase it's not part of the title KWIM
I agree with the other poster that the magazine title should be in italics... but I am once again because if I was referring to Time magazine in my writing, I would refer to it as Time, and not write 'magazine' since it's implied with the italics.....
But then again, I only do scientific writing. We only have to be succinct, we often lack flawless grammar
