questions if your DC wears glasses
I brought DS to an opthamologist when he was a year because I saw that his left eye would turn out when he was looking far away. The Dr. said that he was nearsighted (-2.50) and to wait 6 months to see what happened.
Fast forward 6 months - brought DS back and he is still -2.50 in just his left eye. His right eye is fine.
We are going for a second opinion on the 19th, but deep down I know that DS is going to need glasses.
My questions are:
Where did you get your DS's glasses from? We have insurance, but it's not the best coverage. I'm looking for rec's for a good place, and hopefully they will take the insurance. I'm in central Nassau but will travel.
How old was your DC when they got glasses and if they were 18 months (or younger) did you get regular looking glasses, or the more goggle looking ones.
How the heck do you get them to keep them on and not rip them off !!
TIA !!

Re: questions if your DC wears glasses
AJ doesnt wear them (YET, thank god, knock on wood it stays that way)
Ive been wearing glasses as long as my father can remember. They had different types back then but I looked into it expecting AJ to have bad eyesight. I have -7.75 & -6.50. Meh
They had some VERY durable, flexible ones at Eyemasters. AJ actually liked them so much she didnt want to take them off. However she's older. For the younger set they have bands that hold them in place.
A few kids in her class had them in the 18-2yr old room. None of the kids noticed it other than they wanted to wear them.
Medical insurance won't cover them. Vision will discount the cost of the frames generally. As as well as toss in some freebie options/upgrades. I have vision for my hubby and I we got transitions, expensive frames, my lenses were only like $60 and the rest I paid out of pocket for bells and whistles if you will.
You can call before you go to see if they accept your insurance. FSA can help pick up the rest if you have it (its what I used).
Good Luck!!!

Re: questions if your DC wears glasses
My daughter wears glasses. We found out because she was constantly getting headaches so we took her to the doc. We found out that she had astigmatism in her left eye. Our opthamiologist patched her to make that eye stronger or it would have became lazy.
She started wearing glasses around 3 years old. She basically wears regular glasses.

Your eyes are like my sisters!! Mine aren't that bad, they are -3.25 & -3.50. I ment vision coverage when i said insurance. They don't really cover much and i can always pay out of pocket and be reimbursed. When I get my glasses I still have to pay $$$. I know a lot of places don't like to work with younger kids and would love to find a place that is comfortable with it.
I am amazed at how cheap I can get them online, but wouldn't feel comfortable doing it for DS because I want to make sure they look good on his face. Although I am looking into getting me another pair, for about $30-$40 total it's worth it!!
The 1st eye dr wanted him to get these goggle looking glasses, and when I asked about more regular looking ones he said not until 2 years old. He's 18 months though, so I am thinking he would be okay in regular ones.

Re: questions if your DC wears glasses
My son was 21 months when he got his glasses and we decided to get the regular pediatric frames instead of the baby glasses (goggle type). We got the temple cables for them which are the rubbery pieces that go around the whole back of his ears so they don't fall off. We went to places in Smithtown and Stony Brook (that might be too far for you). We had to go to 2 places because only 1 of them took our vision plan but they didn't have a good selection of pediatric frames so we went to the other to choose the frames but had to order them from the first place. He seems to really like them and he's only been wearing them a little over a month. It took 1 full day of him taking them off and me having to keep putting them back on and now he asks for them . . When he's in the tub or going to sleep and they look so cute on him!! if you have any other questions feel free to fm me. Good luck!

Re: questions if your DC wears glasses
DS got glasses at 11 months. IMO i don't agree with your doctor about waiting. I was praised by doctors for taking action so young. the eyes are still developing and the sooner you can get glasses on them the better the chances of it correcting itself without patching or surgery later on. DS is normal in his left eye and -3.5 in his right. so the left lens is a dummy.
that being said i don't recommend the goggle glasses...the ones that go around the head. they're a choking hazard. you should get the glasses with the cable behind the ears. it took DS maybe a month to get used to it...and he was 11 months then. but now hes 2.5 and LOVES his glasses. he doesnt have the cables anymore. he wakes up asking for them.
i was so upset when i found out he needed them, but then i figured if this is the worst thing to happen to him...i'll take it!
my insurance SUCKS! i have DC37. I go to Access Optical in Merrick and I seriously cannot recommend them more! They are amazing. if they take my insurance they'll take yours. but i only get like $100 off. i take DS there about once a month to get his glasses tighten. ive never been charged for any type of adjustments, fixes or replacements. the people there are unbelievably friendly. DS knows them so well that when i say we're going to get your glasses fixed he'll say...we go see Johnny?? (or Tracey, Jared, Shari) and when he gets there he gives them huge hugs.
GL and please FM me if you have any questions!

Your DS is only a few months older then mine, so its good to know that we don't have to get the goggle ones. Also nice to hear that he got used to them so quickly!!

Re: questions if your DC wears glasses
You Ds's eyes are pretty much the opposite of my Ds's !! Lol. He is adorable btw!!!
I've heard good things about Access, and the do take the vision benefit so if/when the 2nd Dr tells us he needs glasses we'll get the script and go there.
DS was born 7weeks early, had no breathing issues and was home in 10 days, so I agree that if glasses are the worst thing that happens, I'll take it!!
