Questions/Help on Alternate Route for Teaching in NJ

Hi,
Is anyone familiar with or has gone through the alternate route for teaching certification in NJ ? I am beginning the process and have so many questions. It is impossible to get someone live to talk to at the NJ Board of Ed and unfortunately I don't know anyone else who has gone this route.

Thanks so much in advance !!!

Re: Questions/Help on Alternate Route for Teaching in NJ

I would assume that the NJ state dept. of ed. has a website? I know on the NY one, everything you need to do to get certified in NY with another state license is on the NY site... i would check it out.

I did my undergrad. in PA and when I went to NY all i had to do was take my NYS teacher exams to get certified, that was it. NJ uses the same tests as PA (called Praxis). they will probably make you take those and if it is the same as it was when i graduated in 1999 there were SIX tests... a lot of wasted money since i never taught in PA, but they were very easy.

i live in NJ and have a friend who did alternate route... i'll try and remember next time i talk to her to see what it involved.
i think basically though it was student teaching and taking the praxis test...

Re: Questions/Help on Alternate Route for Teaching in NJ

Thanks guys. I have been on the website and it did help but I was given some different info by a few people as to what to do first. I am going to register for the Praxis and also try to take classes that are needed. I am just confused bc the website said to take the test then get a job and then take the courses. Someone I know going through this is doing the opposite.

Thanks for your help- I really appreciate it !!
