Questions for Moms whose spouses are firefighters or police officers (flex schedule) about daycare...

DH is a firefighter. He works one day on, two days off so his schedule always changes. He also never works Mondays for fire dept so he has perm day at second job on Monday and can fill in extra hours there when he wants. How in the world do you do daycare?Chat Icon We are not going to have a family member watching the baby so will need some type of daycare. Was it difficult to find a flexible situation? It's not like I can tell a daycare - ok - we only need three days a week - these are the days - because it changes on a weekly basis. What did you do? What did you find? I'm just nervous that we're not going to be able to find something that fits our needs and we're going to be shelling out a lot more $$$ for days we don't use.

Any advice and sharing of your experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!

My DH's hours vary as well (it changes week by week). I searched craigslist and found a babysitter who is ok with our irratic schedule. We call her Fridays and tell her what days we will need her for the following week. Its been working out great

unfortunately it s*cks!!!! Luckily we've had family members to help us, but we're starting ds in daycare in sept. However the woman who does it, her husband is a cop that works with my DH... so she knows the schedule and is being flexible. If it was anyone else or a business... they would not be so flexible.

Good luck! I know it's hard! It's nice that they're around as much as they are, but it's also a catch 22. Chat Icon

Thanks ladies. I keep asking him to ask other guys/girls at firehouse - maybe they know of people who are willing to work with schedule!

DH is a cop and his schedule not only changes week by week, but sometimes day by day. This is the reason I didnt go back to work f/t. I couldn't see paying for daycare or a nanny when DH could be home.

I work p/t. DH is off on Monday so I work that day and my parents watch DS the other day or two I work.

We had a woman who ran a daycare in her home. She was AWESOME and totally flexible. We would let her know the week before what we woul be doing the following week. I can't say enough good things about Cindy..... she's incredible and I don't know what we would have done without her. DH is a city cop and has a crazy erratic schedule.

IT SUCKS!!!!!!

DH's days and hours change every week. But my schedule is horrible too. (WE both work 24/7 jobs) I let my job know if they wanted me back that they would need to rotate around DH's schedule.

We have no family around, so it's just us. Chat Icon

Most of the big daycare have one bed per child which means that you can show up any three days and its fine as no one else can use that bed. If you know you will at least do three days, try to find a daycare center that offers part time.

Personally, I'm not comfortable with finding someone off Craigslist - unless I heard about someone through word of mouth - which I haven't.

I've found it very difficult to find a daycare that does PT in the infant room, and none that do whatever days you want per week.

This is what I'm worried about! Hoping to not have to put baby in daycare until next August - so I do have a year to research! As someone mentioned, nice to have DH home but schedule is so frustrating! The good thing is, although his schedule rotates- it's set - he's "B shift" - so I could look up his schedule for 5 years from now and see what it was. So it won't change at the last minute, but still not a "norm" easy schedule.

ITA with Jessee. It is nearly impossible to find that in a daycare facility.

My DH is EMS for the FDNY, his schedule rotates weekly and when I was working he worked nights and was home with DS during the day...

It is very hardChat Icon

Seamus has been going to part time daycare since he was 3 months old! The place is right down the block from my job. He goes Tues and Thursdays. If I need a extra day, they are great because he already has a bed. I have to keep the same permanent days every week though. No changing

DH is an EMT but works 12 hour shifts and the days vary. We found an in home day care center that would work with out schedule. DS will start there in Sept.

I have a babysitter that comes to my home. I work from home but also travel in two states so my schedule can change. Right now we have a pretty normal schedule but she is open to changes. I found her on Craigslist, checked her references. It has worked out great for us. She did need to have some minor surgery and took a week off but we were able to work it out. There are drop in day cares you can use for those types of situations

My husband is NYPD and makes his own schedule. Until my boys were old enough for full day preschool, he worked nights and stayed home with the kids.
We did a brief stint with a nanny who didn't work out and had a very flexible sitter who would watch the kids for an hour or 2 if my husband had to go in early for something special.

The year they went to school full time, my husband finally got to sleep!Chat Icon

I would say you have a better chance at having someone come to your home or using an in-home daycare provider. Are the hours that you would need care set, just the days change? I would think someone would be willing to work with you if you were able to agree on a base pay as long as the amount of hours stay constant, but the days change. Honestly, I would think your best bet would be another mom who has a child close to your childs age. If they are a SAHM, maybe they would be willing to help out, a way to make some money and still be with their own child. I would post on here. You have time for them to get to know your DC and you to get to know them. Good Luck!

Yeah - I realize this is the route I'm probably going to have to go. I WISH I could find someone from here. But the chances of that, with me living in Florida now, prob aren't that hot!Chat Icon Chat Icon

is your husband with the fdny or out in li? can he get a 24 partner to help his schedule a bit? maybe looking for a person who does it in their home would work for you.
