Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
If you have PCOS, did you get screened early for GD? If so, when? Did you pass?
If you took/are taking Metformin, how long did/will you take it for?
My RE wants me on it through my first trimester than said it will be up to the OB to decide whether I stay on it. He said he believes it prevents GD- I haven't done any research on it, so I have no idea but obviously I trust him lol.
TIA!

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
I was on Metformin while TTCing my DD (IVF). They took me off of it once I got my BFP.
My OB did not test me early for GD, and I did end up having it with my DD.
When I got pregnant with DS (also IVF/FET) I had not been on Metformin prior, I was tested early for GD because I had it with DD and I got pregnant only 10 months after DD was born. I did not have GD with my 2nd pregnancy.

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
I had PCOS, was on metformin 750mg 2 times a day till week 12. yes, got early screening for GD ( around week 22), failed both tests so, GD it is for me. But for now, it is controlled with diet only, no meds. I wish i stayed on metformin as dr B advised me to. GL!

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
With my first pregnancy, I stayed on Metformin until around 10wks. Once I started with my OB, I stopped taking it. I was screened at 14wks for GD and did not have it. I actually passed by a lot. I was told though that even though I was getting screened early, I would still need to get tested again around 28wks because they said it could still develop.

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
We advise patients to stay on it until 12ish weeks and also tell them that it is up to their OB.

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
I wonder, if its completely safe to take during pregnancy, why the ob takes you off it, esp if ppl with pcos are at high risk for gd. Hmmm I guess if I make it to that stage, I guess ill find out. Thanks for your responses.

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
I was on it while ttc and stayed on it my entire pregnancy. Around 28 weeks my sugars went a bit crazy and I was able to up my metformin rather than going on needle insulin. I was told it's a category b drug and perfectly harmless during pregnancy.

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
Stopped Metformin at 12 weeks. Early GD test I passed. Later failed the 1 hour, puked during the 3 hour so followed a GD diet, which I pretty much do low GI anyway. Had to go on insulin (bed time only) at 32 weeks after I got steroid shot for baby's lungs. Stayed on it until I delivered, no issues since and no Metformin (only took it while TTC).

Re: Questions about PCOS, Metformin and GD
I've been on Metormin for years, including through this pregnancy. I'm 28 weeks now, and was not tested early. I was tested at 26 weeks and passed mt 1 hour test with a 105 reading.

I was on it prior to TTC, during my IVF and throughout my pregnancy. I was on 1500 mg but when I got released to my OB, we decreased it to 500 mg/day. I did not develop GD and DD was born perfectly healthy
