Re: Questions about making a report to CPS

Unfortunately, in my role as a school psychologist, I have had to call ACS several times. There is a NYS hotline for mandated reporters (i.e., teachers, social workers, psychologists, doctors, other school professionals): 1-800-635-1522. I don't know the number for non-mandated reporters (which I don't believe you are), but if you call that one, they will direct you to the right number.

All calls are supposed to be anonymous. I say "supposed to be", b/c often in my case, the parent knows that the school called, either based on circumstance, or b/c of an unethical ACS worker saying, "the school said...." I obviously don't know your situation, but if, let's say, it's someone in the neighborhood, there's less of a chance of the mother figuring out who called.

Any form of abuse is grounds for calling CPS. It is their job to determine if they will take the case, not your job. If you have any concern about a child being abused, call them. The person who you reach on the phone will gather information from you and determine whether or not to take the case. Often, they won't take even physical abuse reports unless there are actual marks/bruises being reported, but let them make that decision.

Please feel free to FM me with any questions. You are wonderful for doing the right thing to help this child.

She took the words right out of my mouth.

Good luck - I know those calls are hard to make. But it's possible that your phone call will get the family the help it certainly seems to need. Chat Icon

Im a teacher and have had to call and in one instance the case worker did tell the parent that "the teacher" was the one who called (obviously me).. but like Jax mentioned, you are a random person calling so it would be harder to figure out who you are. They may say a neighbor called, but probably wouldn't say your name.

I think you are technically suppose to give your name, I dont know if you can get around that.

Me too... it's unfortunate, but sometimes you just have to do it.

Sadly I had to call once & did it from a pay phone (if you can still find one) & it was anonymous.

Your call will be anonymous. When I used to get the reports in court we never had the complainant's name. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You've gotten great advice already, I'll just add that I would be clear when you make the report that you fear the abuser and stress the importance of them keeping your anonymity (even though they're supposed to anyway)
