questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
DS is 5 months old; we recently put him in his crib (we had a big bassinet so he fit in it for a long time). Lately, he has been attempting to roll over. During tummy time, he rolls from belly to back, but still has not quite made it from back to belly. What is freaking me out is that when I put him down to sleep for the night, he keeps attempting to roll over. I'm scared to wake up and find him on his belly. Is this something to worry about or will he be ok since he is lifting his head? I thought of getting a sleep positioner, but felt that might wake him as he gets frustrated when he cannot roll over.
Any ideas on this?

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
My DS has been leaning to his side when I lay him down at night.
My lazy little boy does NOT roll either way yet......BUT can lift his head & shoulders just fine.
When he does start to roll I wouldn't be to concerned!

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
My babies were both belly sleepers from day one. I am pretty sure when they are able to roll onto their belly on their own - they are fine to sleep that way! HTH

If he's lifting his head, he is fine!
On a side note.... my DD was sleeping on her tummy since she was 7ish weeks old - it was the only way that she would sleep through the night peacefully b/c of her reflux!

Thanks - my friend also had both her DDs on their belly for the same reason.

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
My 6 month old started rolling to his belly at 4 months, needlessly to say we were scared as anything at night. We spoke with my doctor and she said not to worry since he has good head control. He is a belly sleeper now all of the time...

I'm hoping I'll he'll cry if there are any issues where he can't get back over.

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
My doctor said once they can roll, there is nothing you can do about them sleeping on their belly.

I realized that last night - everytime I tried to put him on his back, he insisted on going on his side and trying to roll to the belly

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
If hes attempting to roll over.. I would not use a positioner. Your supposed to remove from crib once they are able to roll b/c its a danger them. Only concern I would have is how close is he to the bumpers when trying to roll over. I would just worry about a limb getting possible entangled in bumper of face staying to close to it.

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
both my friends said that once their DC's were able to roll over they also knew how to turn their heads to sleep comfortably. They always flipped right over in the crib after that and only slept on their bellies!

Should I get rid of the bumpers? I keep reading different ideas on that - some say they are good, some say dangerous.

I got rid of the bumpers, but them DS started to stick his arms and legs between the slats, so I got breathable bumpers.

My doctor said the same thing. he even said it was okay to start putting them right on their belly to sleep since they're going to end up that way anyway.

I never had bumpers in but once he started rolling he would roll and wake himself up banging into the crib railing and then amuse himself by running his hand along the slats. he was waking at 5AM.
I put the bumpers back in and once he had nothing to play with and a soft surface to roll into, he ended up sleeping till 6:30-7AM.
The bumpers also helped bc he was intentionally dropping them out of his crib and when he woke up he couldn't find his paci to self-soothe and now he can and if he wakes up for a bit, he rolls finds his paci and puts himself back to sleep.

Re: questions about baby rolling over & sleeping
Once they can roll, I was told the risk of SIDS reduces dramatically...I took the sleep positioner out as soon as she could roll from belly to back...
