Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
I beleive when they say image it is the same picture in color and B&W or any other editing tool they use...you might only have 12 shots on the CD but a few different edits of the same picture....that is my understanding...

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
i would probably be annoyed to only get a few pics and just have the color different. if the editing is the same and they just changed it from color to b&w i dont see that as being 2 pics. seems pretty easy to just change the color and say its an image.

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
what was specified in your contract and discussed prior to the session? My feeling is a black and white conversion of the same image is not counted as a secondary image and no one should ever cut your time short unless it says "up to 30 minutes" or time was deducted due to lateness, etc. No matter what you pay for photographs you should always have things in writing and is properly discussed this way the photographer and you both start off with knowing exactly what is going to play out at the session.

A real photographer doesn't just hit the black and white button on photoshop to change it from color so its more time consuming then it sounds.
It all comes down to if you signed a contract. If you did, what does the contract say about the amount of images? If you didn't sign one then speak up and let her know you expected more.
Also if the images have watermarks then it sounds like those photos were for sharing purposes only. Not printing.

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
I agree that 2 versions of the same photo shouldn't count as two photos, but like pp said, the editing does take a lot of time! It also seems you did not get a disk with the rights to use the photos. Did you get a release to use them? I would contact photographer and go from there..

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
I would be upset about this as well and I dont think it can hurt to ask if there were any other shots not included on the cd.
I would be MORE upset if I paid for a CD and the photographers logo was blocking the image in the pic! Is that what you meant when you mentioned the logo? Bc that is just not right! It's one thing I'd it's in the bottom corner, but another thing if it's in the way of the image!

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
i agree black and whites are not as simple as hitting a button there is fine tuning with that. It is why photographers say your not allowed to edit the photographs that are given to you (print release only) since many don't know how to convert an image to black and white correctly and butcher the image (as well as selective color which is a no no.)
Logos = non printing rights and possibly you might not have high res files for printing. Usually its a low res for sharing on FB or blogs or boards.

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
I know this a strange question but did the photos you DID get blow you away? I think it comes down to even two amazing photos than 30 just ok ones for me. Honestly, you are probably only going to use one or two from the shoot in the long run. Just my two cents as a very amateur photographer and hoping that it makes you feel better about the experience.

I can't really approach the photographer (based on the relationship to my friend). But I'm so disappointed and can't figure out if I'm wrong.
Simply put, did you pay for the session at full price? If so, regardless of your friend's relationship with this photographer, you have every right to complain and voice your disappointment.
While converting to B&W is not as simple as hitting a button - it can be (if you have Photoshop and not really care about the result - I have my own photo business)... this photographer did not live up to the promise. If it was agreed upon 30 images... that's 30 DIFFERENT images (in color), and then the conversion to B&W would give you 60 images.
I would definitely say something... and if it helps, mention something to your friend afterwards. There's nothing worse than finding out that you've recommended someone and the client is NOT happy.
JMHO.

Re: Question re: photo shoot problem
I would leave my friend out of it & deal with the photographer you contracted directly.
Email the photographer & tell her/him you are disappointed & that you wish it was spelled out beforehand that you would be getting so few images & that the cd was low resolution files (if they are). The low resolution files are for emailing & posting on the internet & (if the photographer knows what they are doing) are sharpened for the web. A high resolution file posted to the web actually shows up slightly blurry but prints better. You will need the high-resolution files to print
One thing this photographer should know is that going professional means you act professionally. Whether you are portfolio building at $150 or paying for a photographer's time at $350, you need to manage your client's expectations.
My guess is because the logo is on some of the images but not others, she screwed up & gave you a mix of them.
