Question re: "credit protection" from car dealer
We recently bought a new car from a big name car dealer but towards the end of the transaction it all started to feel a little shady. (they started coming up with all sorts of added fees etc). We went through with it because we were happy with the price/vehicle, but when DH went to pick it up over the weekend and sign all the paperwork, one of the forms they had him sign was a free year of credit protection. Just trying to figure out the catch here and who is benefiting? The car dealer isn't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, so only thing I can figure is this credit protection company pays the dealer for our info? And then this company will probably try to get us to sign up for more services? I'm just a bit skeptical and concerned over who ends up with our information.

Question re:
Or they sign you up for a year with your credit card. After a year when you forget to cancel they will charge you $70. $80, $100????
This smacks of "have it for free, forget and we chArge you a bundle".
Did he sign the paper?
Can I ask what dealership? Or at least whT model car you bought?

Question re:
We did put some of the balance on our credit card, so I will definitely have to keep an eye on those statements to make sure they dont charge us a fee on there. I didnt even think about that...that they would sign up that card with this protection. He did sign the form....they told him it was free blah blah blah and he said Ok.

Question re:
Yup. Free blah blah for a year...... I say call, and certainly look at the contract for the protection.

Just read the contract to see what he signed. It could be a number of things, but the contract will certainly tell you what he agreed to.

Question re:
There was no contract, it was just a piece of paper, with our name, address, car info etc, and then at the bottom it said One Year Credit Protection Free. There was no other fine print or details given.

Re: Question re: "credit protection" from car dealer
I think they all do this.
DH bought a truck recently from a big name dealer and they sold him rim & wheel insurance from a private company. They said if he gets a scratch on his rim, they'll replace it, blah, blah, blah. Sure enough, DH got a scratch on the rim and tried to go through the insurance. Well, the insurance co. said that they only replace the rim if the truck is undriveable! WHAT??!!
Anyway, he made a stink and the dealer wrote him a check for the cost of the insurance.
