question for the IT/Computer gurus
ok, i'm at a client's office. i'm using an ethernet cable to connect to their network. when i plug in the cable, everything looks good. it tells me I'm connected at a 100 Mbps speed. but when i click on internet explorer to connect to the internet...zero, zilch, nada. Any suggestions? And unfortunately no, there is no IT person here who can help me.
TIA!
oh yeah, i'm presently using a dial-up connection (ugh) to get online...but I can't keep the phone line tied up all day.

Re: question for the IT/Computer gurus
Do you have a real IP address? (164.254.*.*) is a microsoft range for when your local computer can't connect to a DHCP server - if you have that you arent getting an IP address.
Can you ping anything?
Are they using a proxy server? Maybe you need to peek at someone elses computer to see if they have any proxy setup.
Maybe they have NAC setup, and your MAC address isn't allowed to browse the net.
There are many possible issues.

Re: question for the IT/Computer gurus
Are other machines on the Internet? Can you check their settings? Besides an IP address, you need to have a valid subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP server, and DNS server.
Click Start->Run, and type "cmd" to get to a command prompt "DOS prompt"
type "ipconfig /all" <ENTER>
Do the same on a working machine. Everything should look the same on both machines except for the IP Address (and host name, physical address, etc.)

Re: question for the IT/Computer gurus
Go to a computer that has working internet access and go to:
Tools ->Options ->Connections tab ->Lan settings
Duplicate those settings in your browser.
BTW, still might not work, all depends on how their security is set up.
