Question for mommies who gave their babies cereal
My DS is going to be 3 months old on Friday we decided that we are going to start feeding him some cereal because he is able to sit up with support and at his 2 month dr. appointment, the dr. said that he was the size of an average 4 month old and to start cereal when he is 4 months...being his size and ability to sit up with support, we are going to feed him cereal...we can tell that he's ready! my question is, which cereal did you start your DC on? and how old were they when you started them on it??

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
I waited until they were 4 months as well. I started with oatmeal for both.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
We didn't start DD on cereal until she was 5mo and we started with rice. They need to be old enough to out grow the tongue thrust reflex and that doesn't normally happen until 4-6 mo.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
At 4m I gave DS earth's best oatmeal, rice and mixed grains. 3 days of each. He was huge too, over 19lbs by then.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
We started at 3.5 months. Skipped rice and started with earths best oatmeal. DS hated it - so we gave him Beech Nut which he loved. Now we only give him Beech Nut Barley because he loves it and it's the least binding.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
I started DS on Gerber's organic brown rice, but that did not work well. I have been giving him organic oatmeal, and he is much better. Haven't tried barley yet.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
DD was EBF and didn't start any solids until after she was 6 months old. At that time I started her on Earth's Best Rice cereal, moved on to oatmeal and then mixed grains.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
We were planning to wait until 6 months but our son had slow weight gain at his 4 month appt. so the ped recommended we start it then. We only did oatmeal, have never done any other cereals.

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
We started DS on cereal at 4.5 months. Rice first, then oatmeal 2 weeks later. He took to both like a champ!

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
we were planning on starting at 4 months but now with the new studies saying that it possibly leads to overweight kids, I am thinking of delaying until 5 or 6 months... at that time we will start with oatmeal and skip the rice cereal

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
we started Ava on cereal at a week before 4 months but she was def ready before that. We started on rice(even though her formula has rice already in it) it can constipate. We started with once a day and than worked up to 3 times a day. I would not try giving it to him at night because in case he has stomach problems in the beginning its better to fig that out in the day time not when hes sleeping. so rice, oatmeal and barley.
let me know how it goes!!!!!

Re: Question for mommys who gave their babies cereal
DD#1 was 4 months when we started w/ cereal - went straight to oatmeal.
DD#2 was 6 weeks when we started with cereal, but that was ina bottle, for reflux. She's almost 5 months and not quite "getting" the spoon, so we're waiting a bit longer for feeding in the high chair.

We started DS on cereal at 4mo. We used Beechnut rice cereal and oatmeal because it's soy free. We skipped barley.

We used rice cereal, but it was very constipating. I would recommend oatmeal.

Ped told us to start with oatmeal bc rice can cause constipation. They were 4 months.

Re: Question for mommies who gave their babies cereal
thank you for all your feedback ladies, it's very much appreciated! wow it seems like everyone does start at 4 months! He is only 3 months BUT the box says that your child may be ready if they sit up with help and support, and he does that! I bought oatmeal and I am going to put some in my baby's bottle today! We will feed him the bottle in the highchair...it will be his first feeding in the highchair!! I will let you know how it goes, I have a feeling that he is going to love it! I'll take pics

Re: Question for mommies who gave their babies cereal
We started at 4 months, IMO I would wait till at least then. It's not just the sitting up, it's more of their digestive system being so immature.
Is there any other reason you want to start now? Not sleeping, does the bottle or if you BF not satisfy him enough?
I also would not put it in the bottle unless there is a reason you need to such as spit up, reflux, etc..
We started rice at 4 months, week later oatmeal and we are just starting fruits now at 5 months.
I am no expert, but just giving my opinion.

Re: Question for mommies who gave their babies cereal
thanks I definitely do appreciate your opinion!! the reason why I am considering it is because lately my DS just does not seem to be satisfied with his bottles, his eating has been "off" he doesn't finish his bottles half the time, and I feel like he is transitioning, maybe to more ounces and less bottles, which I tried, but he isn't getting used to that either..he's a good sleeper, STTN since he was 6 weeks old, and now he is sleeping 12 hrs! he pulls the bottle in and out of his mouth...I don't know, I just have this feeling that he's ready...maybe it's also the fact that my mom has been telling me to start him on cereal since he was a month old lol!....I'm all confused, maybe I should just wait until we go to the doctor in a week!
oh and he is FF (I wish I would have BF for longer than a month, I gave up like an idiot, next time I am going to try for longer!)

I agree, what's the rush? I would check with your Ped. My Ped told us to wait until 6 months even though DD was a supported sitter like your DC at 3.5 months. I was bummed, but now that I read all of these articles about obesity connected with starting solids too early I realize the patience is worth it.
Don't let your Mom pressure you All grandparents seem to want these babies to eat cereal ASAP because that's the way they did it.. but there's been so much research since we were kids that shows there is no benefit to starting early.

See the most important thing is him finishing his bottles, getting his oz in because Formula right now is his main source of nutrition.
The solids at this stage is more of an experimental thing, baby getting used to textures, etc.. so I would say that if he is taking the entire bottle and then seems still hungry, it might be time to start solids, but if he is not finishing his bottles, I would talk to the Ped and ask what they suggest.
You are not doing anything wrong, it's just trial and error right now
