Question about Young Adult books

So a lot of us read them so I've got a question. What age would you feel comfortable letting your kids read most of these?
Twilight was pretty mild in my opinion.
Vampire Academy, I don't know I feel like I would need my kid to be on the older side of teen to read that.
I am reading House of Night right now and well there is a lot of sexual undertone in that and while it's not super detailed again I feel like I would need my teen to be on the older side.

I guess when I hear young adult I think 13-14 but maybe they aren't geared toward that young. Or maybe I'm naive and think I can squash my children's sexual curiosity. Chat Icon

Re: Question about Young Adult books

I've read QUITE a few..i try to justify it saying that I teach hs english, and i want to know what my kids may or may not be reading

hunger games i would say 8th grade or so
twilight i think is fine, there's no cursing, drinking, pre-marital sex..very clean imo
the luxe series is also decently clean..8th grade or so..
uglies/pretties series..8th grade-ish
percy jackson..6th grade or so..also an awesome series

ones i dont think are appropriate?
pretty little liars series
gossip girls series

I agree with Hunger Games. Forgot about that one. It was pretty mild.

I haven't read any of the others you listed.

Re: Question about Young Adult books

House of Night definitely had a little more of it than warranted IMO. I guess that's why I wasn't crazy about the series- the language. I know teens talk like that but Chat Icon. It was hard to read. I guess it really depends on their maturity level. I know my co-worker won't let her 14 year old daughter read Twilight, but I can't see why not? It's promoting abstinence and it's not like the kid doesn't know where babies come from. lol!

ETA: The VA series I'm not far enough into to judge yet. Only halfway through the first book. The Uglies series was very tame, too. I wonder about the other types of books- like Pretty Little Liars. My 17 y/o sister and my 28 y/o best friend both read it so I'm not sure what that says.

I loved the Percy Jackson books, too! Really clever the way they modernized the myths. I thought the movie wasn't bad either- I mean they left a lot out from the books but isn't that always the way?

Re: Question about Young Adult books

Ya know, I'm sitting here reading VA at work and noticing tons of friggin typos! I know they are typos and it's not a big deal, but that drives me crazy! I also noticed this for House of Night and another vampire YA series I read- Thirst. What- do they just assume since it's YA it doesn't matter?

ETA: Or do vampires just have terrible spelling?

I've noticed this in every Nook book I've read so I don't know if it's something with the digital editions editing or what. Not just vamp books.

Re: Question about Young Adult books

My son read Percy Jackson series over the summer (he's in 4th grade now). I think it's a great adventure and while there are some dark moments it's great for that age group. We've started the new Rick Riordan series and it's equally appropriate at his age.

Hunger Games is good and I think I'd let someone start that in middle school.

I don't think I'd let a teenage girl read Twilight. It's mild - but it's filled with way too much obsession. I just don't like the idea of my impressionable kid seeing creepy obsession as undying love. Chat Icon I'd probably want my teen to wait until they have a better handle on real human interaction and relationships for that one.
