Question about toddlers being afraid of Halloween decorations...

Lily is REALLY freaked out by all of the Halloween decorations everywhere!
They don't even have to be scary really....she screams when she sees them and clings to us.
Tonight, she saw a dress I had hanging up to wear tomorrow and she screamed at it like it was the scariest thing she's ever seen....

Is this a common fear among kids this age (she's about 2 1/2)

Will she tell you what is scary about it? Maybe it isn't the decorations but the pumpkins or the colors or something like that. Then you can make it into something silly (that works with Jeremy) Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sarah was like that when she was around that age. I used to have to tell her that monsters aren't allowed in the house and we hung a "Keep Out Monsters" sign in her window until Halloween was over.

There were stores that she refused to go in at all while they had Halloween decorations out. To this day she'll ask me when we pass Ace Hardware if the scary skeletons still live there.

She'll just say "scary witch" or "scary ghost" and then "no, no, no, no" until you take her away from it.
She loves pumpkins...

Hmm, I would do then like what Cathy recommends and pretend (or really do it!) to put some sort of no scary witch signs up.

We can't go near the Halloween decorations in Target. The skeletons really scare DS to the point that he's screaming and clawing his way up your neck Chat Icon

In the car he's all 'I'm not afraid' and points them all out but at the same time they tend to be friendly decorations.

Michael is the exact same way especially in Target with the motion actived figures. DH just told him that they were plastic. He also told him that he could just tell them to "kiss my cheese". It was a cute saying that DH made up that DS does do when he sees a decoration that scares him.
