Question about Toddlers and books...

When did your toddler REALLY get into books? Up until a month or two ago ALL DD wanted to do with her books and chew on themChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon She finally started opening them and looking at the pictures. she is 13 months old. But as soon as I sit with her to either read the book to her or point out what's in the picture....she only wants to close the bookChat Icon Chat Icon

What is up with that?!?! Am I the only one with a child that does NOT seem to be interested in books or being read to? Any suggestions on how to get her more interested?

I always try to read to her before bed...but she would rather nurse and go to sleep than "read".

TIA

Same thing going on here. DD is 12 months. She will flip through independently ..as soon as I want to sit and read with her she closes the book too! All the books are also half chewed! HA

Re: Question about Toddlers and books...

totally normal

Mason LOVES books, but now he loves them too much. He wants me to read a million every night and fast then move on to the next one. Chat Icon

I take 3 books a night and he gets sooo excited. I start reading and then he grabs another and throws it over the one I'm reading. When I start reading the next he goes to get another one. Never ends. Chat Icon

Re: Question about Toddlers and books...

DS is 15 months and in the last 2 weeks he has become a book addict!!! He is constantly bringing me a book to read to him. I read like 10 books in a row (sometimes the same one 3 times in a row) and he loves it. Definitely has his favorites. He will bring a book to whomever is available. We have been reading to him every night since he was 6 weeks old. I love that he's finally showing a love for booksChat Icon

Give it a little bit of time.

Re: Question about Toddlers and books...

Every kid is different but with my DD she's been into books literally since she was a few months old. She never chewed on then or tore them up, she always held them correctly and turned the pages. She's a real bookworm though even at age 2.

I would say around age 1 is when she started to want to really be read to and she was into hearing a story at bedtime. She did go through a phase where she constantly wanted to turn the pages for me while I was reading which was so annoying but that passed. I would just keep at it and eventually she will learn to enjoy your reading time together. Try all different types of books too, find something she really likes whether is be animal books or shapes and colors. You'll stumble onto something she loves at some point! Chat Icon

Edit - Keep a lot of books around too for her to read independently. The more she is surrounded by books the more she will get into them. My DD has bookcases filled with books in our den, her playroom, her bedroom, and we even have a book basket in our bedroom for when she's hanging out in there.

I don't really remember exactly with DD#1, but DD#2 has been pretty good since about 14 months. She's 19 months now and is just starting to get out of the "ripping the pages out of every book she can phase" Chat Icon

Re: Question about Toddlers and books...

DS has been obsessed with books for months, he can sit and flip pages for hours.

I think for him, its kind of like peekaboo, he's excited to flip and see something new.
He's 10m.

Try some more stimulating books, this series is our favorite because of the pictures of cute babies hiding behind colorful toys.

peekaboo - love you

I also played baby can read for him when he was younger, we watched together and I'd pause and talk about the things. I read to him a lot. I don't know if it really had any impact. It just gave us something to do.

Sometimes I wonder if its genetic. DH was bookworm, he's read all the classics and then some. I couldn't stand reading unless it was going to get me something. I learned to read at 4, in 2 languages though... but I was overall a TV baby.

Re: Question about Toddlers and books...

DS didn't start becoming interested in books until he was around 12 months old. Before that, he just wanted to open and close the books.

DS is starting to like to sit with me and read. He does continuously try to close the book but, we usually try to make it through them.

His favorite seems to be Where's Spot - he likes to open all of the flaps and look for spot. He does it so nicely and gently.

He still eats the books though when we're not reading them.

DD now at 18 months LOVES to sit and flip through them and "read" them (babbling through, some words, like I'm reading to her) LOL
