Question about interior doors...

We just moved into our house and want to replace all the doors. I really want solid hardwood and not hollow because I think that it lessens the sound when in the room. We have a ranch and I think it is loud. Most people I have spoken to have hollow doors. Do the solid doors do much to block out the sound? They are much more expensive and I am wondering if they are worth the investment.

Re: Question about interior doors...

Solid doors will block more sound, but keep in mind that most likely, your walls are hollow, and that transmits a lot of sound. If the price isn't too bad, you might want to go with the solid wood, since it should last the life of the house (even with teenagers... Chat Icon Chat Icon ), it has more heft. They will flex more with humidity, though, so keep that in mind.

We also switched our doors to solid core, made a huge difference in the bathroom noise (Chat Icon). The bedrooms as well. Just make sure there isn't too much of a gap on the bottom when they hang them. We had our contractor come back a replace one of the doors because there was a good 1 1/2" to 2" gap on the bottom.

We replaced all interior doors with 6 panel, solid wood doors. Can't say much for sound, because we kept all wood floors and have no carpet, so sound does carry still. But the look is so much nicer!

Re: Question about interior doors...

From HD, the wooden pre-hung doors seem to be mainly between $150-200. The hollow-core pre-hung doors seem to be around $50-$100.

The hollow-core doors look just like wooden doors if you get the molded look ones. It has the wood grain and everything. It's the luan doors that look like a solid sheet of plywood on hinges.

Hmmm. We have all wood floors too. Is there anything that can be put in between the door and the floor to block out some noise...kind of like what is on the bottom of exterior doors, I have no idea what they are called.

They are called sweeps and I'm sure you can find something to put on an interior door but it will probably not be pretty.

I personally feel like a door will only do so much since interior walls are not insulated the sound will transmit anyway. a door will not make that much of a difference.

This is the reason I had the contractor insulate all the interior walls, and the floor/ceiling between the floors. That made a huge difference in sound transference. We have hollow-core doors, but we barely hear any sound from the bedrooms, even when DD is having one of her tantrums.

ITA. Save your money and buy the hollow doors.

Re: Question about interior doors...

We have solid wood.

I grew up with hollow luan doors and you couldn't hang anything on them - like a shoe rack, mirror, etc. I could not decorate my room properly as a teen. It was annoying. Chat Icon

So when we moved in I had to have solid doors.
