question about homeowners claim
About a week ago, in that crazy wind, the side piece of our awning ripped off and fell to the floor. We were just going to throw that piece out because its metal and there is no real way to re attach it... my FIL suggested telling our HO insurance about it with a claim, do you think we should do that? Of course we JUST switched to a new company and I really dont want to make any waves, just wondering if its "worth it". TIA

Re: question about homeowners claim
if you are replacing it get an estimate. What's your deductible?

Re: question about homeowners claim
I would suggest you get detailed info first.
What are the terms of your insurance? Your deductible? What's the replacement cost? Do you have to be concerned that HO insurance will go up?
In the end I wouldn't be surprised if it makes more sense to just pay out of pocket for the repair.

Re: question about homeowners claim
I would say its probably NOT worth it, but I really don't know how much those awning parts cost...unless its big $$ its prob not worth it.

Re: question about homeowners claim
How much is your deductible and how much would it be to fix it?
In this market, unless it was thousands of dollars, I would not file a claim - the insurance companies are looking for any reason to drop LI homes.

Re: question about homeowners claim
Our company (Liberty Mutual) told me that there is a 20% fee added on to the premium for 3 years after the first claim, if you have a second claim, it goes to 30% and for a third claim, 40%.
They also told me that although the premium only stays on the policy for 3 years, it isn't forgiven for 5 - so if you have a second claim in the 4th year, it will be a 30% premium for 2 years and then 20% for one year.
Unless it is going to be thousands to replace, it probably isn't worth it.
