Question about eye contact
So I have noticed that when I am holding KJ talking to him, he DOES NOT make eye contact with me. Is this cause for concern?
If I am accross the room and call his name, he will look at me but if I am up close to him, he will not
normal or not?
He is 9 1/2 months old

Re: Question about eye contact
I don't know, I just know that DS was making eye contact with me since 2 months.
Is it something he used to do and stopped? Or did he never make eye contact?
What if you sit him up, and sing to him face to face?

Re: Question about eye contact
Does he just not make eye contact or does he AVOID eye contact?
Kids at his age are SO distracted and so interested in everything that's going on around them.... KWIM?
And think about it... adults don't just stare into your eyes for long period of time... how awkward would that be?
If he's making eye contact intermittently for brief periods, I'd think that was fine.... like if he looks at you when you initiate conversation or when he wants your attention or wants to initiate some kind of reciprocal interaction (playing, showing you something, etc)

it's like when I call him, he looks away, so I guess that we be avoidance, no
if I am far away from him and I call his name, he will look at me

Re: Question about eye contact
It might just be too intense for him to make eye contact when he is up close. If he is responding to his name, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Question about eye contact
He may just be overstimulated by the eye contact. I read somewhere that babies find eye contact overwhelming at times whihc is why they will look at your face/mouth instead.
How is he with others? Will he make eye contact with them?
I find that I worry about every little thing, literally. I work on a peds inpatient unit and every week I think my DS has something new wrong with him. Just try to not owrry too much yet but keep your eye on it.

Re: Question about eye contact
Try this:
Get on the floor and start playing next to him. Don't force yourself into whatever he's doing. Just pull out something of interest and start playing. If it's interesting to him too, he'll come over to engage you (or the object) in play. At that point, he *should* establish meaningful eye contact.
If something funny or startling happens (Jack in the Box is a good one), he should look to you to see your reaction. That's also considered meaningful eye contact.
Watch him with Miki while they're interacting. I'll bet there's TONS of eye contact there.
I swear, it's always when we're actively thinking about something that we suddenly notice it's not there.
