Question about DSLR lenses...

I actually have asked this beore but haven't gotten responses .... it is a weird question...

Can you use regular film-SLR camera lenses with digital SLR cameras?

I have 3 lenses from my late MIL's film SLR....and really really really really want a DSLR.........

Ok --- I did a google search, and it looks like they are compatable.

I know I have at least 2 lenses then....

My sister and I were debating getting a Nikon D40. She said I wouldn't be happy with it unless I bought other lenses, since the one it comes with is only 18-55......

but....I have to pull my other lenses out of the closet.

Does anyone have a D40 who would be willing to meet up and try my lenses? If it works, I might be able to talk DH into me getting one for Christmas, being that my birthday came and went with no camera
I don't think I've ever wanted a material object as badly as this....aside from my engagement ring!
