Question about catholic school...
For those of you who send your dc to a catholic school, and where both you and your spouse work full time - how burdensome do you find all of the half days and religious days off? Do you have family that helps you out on those days? Do you pay for a sitter (and if so, is it a financial strain to cover both tuition and this supplemental childcare)? We're seriously considering catholic school but I just don't understand how people do it... I want to make sure we've thought everything out...

Re: Question about catholic school...
I think every school is the same... you have so many half days and random religious days that you needs a full time sitter or very available backup system.

Re: Question about catholic school...
I disagree. I work in the public schools, so we would have some overlap of days off, but they have a half day the first Friday of every month, and pretty much every day before a long holiday, and a lot in June (more than just that last week). I counted about 20 half days - way more than the public schools.

That's crazy! Maybe people have nannies?
We might put DD in Catholic school for kindergarten to circumvent the 12/1 cutoff depending on where we move. I hadn't thought of all these extra half days.

Question about catholic school...
That's odd they have that the first Friday of every month? Maybe professional development days? My brother and I went to catholic school, my mom was home some of that time but other than that either she or my dad took off. I have a sitter for my kids now they don't go to day care so if something happens, I'm taking off.

Question about catholic school...
It may depend on the school my dd's school doesn't have the half days every month and no days off in June. The half days before major holidays I thought was standard.

Re: Question about catholic school...
The freaking half days are ridiculous. I was just complaining about that because I had to work from home all week since the first week is half days with no after care. My son started Tuesday. Thank goodness, I switch schools so I don't have to deal with the 1st of the month half day.
Basically, my son goes to aftercare on half days. If there is no aftercare then I work from home or DH has to take off. For the days off, I take off or WFH. My DH doesn't get paid if he takes off so that is only in emergencies. The random professional days and half days are annoying. For Easter break, I did a YMCA camp to make up for the random days I was taking off.
Last year we found a high school senior who was able to pick him up since her school was right next to his but we lost her to College.

Re: Question about catholic school...
My cousin's daughter goes to catholic school. She has a babysitter (her friend's mom who retired) pick her daughter up from school. She gives her a snack, starts her hw, and stays with her until about 6-6:30 when she is rushing home from the city.
She goes the sitter after half days too. My cousin tries to work from home a lot of the half days so she doesn't have to use the sitter. But yeah, it's a lot of time off.

Re: Question about catholic school...
Are you in NY state? NY has just altered the definition of a school day this Spring. Schools need a minimum of 180 days of instruction. Half days no longer count towards those 180. Our school (public) used to have half day K for the first 2 weeks but changed it this year. We "lost" other half days too. Catholic schools and private schools all need to follow NYS rules.
Kindergarten, though, can be half day. So your particular program may be different... for K. Otherwise, count the number of days.
180 days of instruction doesn't help so much in terms of childcare for us, personally (my hubby and I work normally 10-11 hour days at a minimum). Before and aftercare hours are too short and most people end up getting a sitter or having family help out after school.

Question about catholic school...
I would think you'll need to use aftercare. Although I'm a teacher, I will have to use aftercare cause there's no way I will be able to get home before his bus gets there even on a regular day.
My siblings and I went to catholic school and my grandparents picked us up when my parents had work.

This is interesting. The calendar is for the whole school (up to grade 8), and they have the tally of school days at the bottom of each page, and the half days are counted into this whole, as if they are a full day. I'll have to find the state guidelines! I wonder if like a half hour over a half day counts as a full day or if it has to be a full full day.

it's not odd believe it or not. I went to catholic school my whole life, and our parish had half days every 1st and 3rd friday of the month. We went to church in the mornings on those days and left by 11:30. We also ended school a week or two earlier than the public schools.

Just a FYI you can't circumvent the 12/1 cutoff by putting a child in catholic school. At one point you could but not anymore. Your home district paying for transportation and books for that catholic school so the catholic school will not take you if you do not fall in the guild lines of your home district. I tried. I spoke to multiple catholic schools along with the superintendent of the diocese.

Question about catholic school...
That's not always the case. A friend of mine just moved from NYC to LI. His daughter already completed a year of full day PreK and was scheduled to start K this sept in NYC. Her birthday is 12-12, and while she wasn't allowed to begin K in our LI district, the local catholic school accepted her and she is now a K student. She'll transfer to public school next year for grade 1.

I'm also curious as to how this applies to religious schools-I have half days every Friday from September-march, but then again our school day is longer than a public school day

Agreed. We're leaving LI and going to Westchester. Most of the districts up there are 12/31 cutoffs except for a handful and those districts will allow children who completed an accredited K program into first grade. We would obviously prefer just going to a 12/31 district but glad we have the option just in case. I've done a disgusting amount of research
