Question About Beta Test
This is my first all natural pregnancy so coming from a history with RE's I am use to getting betas........and a lot of them. So naturally when I saw my OB the other day I assumed she would order a beta test but she didn't.........at least not until I insisted. She said they aren't really necessary. I was very surprised.
So tell me, is this normal? Any of you out there that never had a beta? Does this seem weird to anyone? Thanks!!

Question About Beta Test
I only had one with each pregnancy because I have completely irregular periods and they wanted to try to date me somehow. I was told that if it weren't for that, they would not have done a beta at all. I only had one beta done with each pregnancy. They never did a repeat or anything. I wasn't even allowed to go in to see the OB until I was 8 weeks (or somewhere close to it)! They said there was no point because they wouldn't do anything for me before that.
ETA: Congratulations!!!

Re: Question About Beta Test
Wow!!! That is so interesting. I had NO clue........I just assumed repeat betas early on were standard practice. I guess I have a lot to get use to not being with an RE, I feel clueless.

Re: Question About Beta Test
i think its normal for OBs to run betas on higher risk patients or people with losses or people who haven't a clue when they conceived but don't show anything on sono. otherwise i dont think OBs usually do betas unless begged. one good thing (and nerve wracking thing) about seeing REs!!

Re: Question About Beta Test
Didn't have one with my first, but had one with my second. It felt pointless to me. I took (several) hpts, no doubt I was pregnant. It seems like there is such a range of numbers that it basically said nothing. I think if you do a few than they can check your numbers are rising appropriately, but I just had one and it felt pointless.
ETA: I had no clue when I conceived, so after the number came back I had to have a sonogram. Wish we had just skipped to that part, ha.

Re: Question About Beta Test
I have two miscarriages in my history, one that was ectopic. Therefore I figured they would want to do the betas to keep an eye on things but I guess it's just not how it's done.
Normally, I am also very irregular too with my cycles but I tracked everything this time around and used the CBEFM so they were able to date me easily. I have the sono in less than two weeks, I am anxious for it so that I know things are ok. This is so hard, I miss being at the RE. lol

I see what you mean. Makes sense, just not use to it. I can't stop taking HPTs......it's the only thing relaxing me. I feel good when I see those dark, thick, pink lines. With my two miscarriages the HPTs were faint, never darkened, just not right in any way. So seeing that beautiful pink line keeps me sane.......especially with no betas.

Kept me sane too! My husband finally cut me off at 9 weeks when I was sick all day! I never thought I'd actually enjoy being ill
Congratulations!
