putting cereal in breast milk...

when is it suggested to put rice cereal (or oatmeal) in DC's breast milk/formula bottle?? I hear so many different opinions... but I just wanted to get a gauge on here... since I really value your opinions/suggestions.

Thanks!!!

Re: putting cereal in breast milk...

I don't think it's ever suggested...unless there is a reflux issue.

Never. It is a choking hazard

The only time it is recommended in a bottle is for reflux and then the ped should be the one to suggest it

see everyones opinion is soooooo varied- from extreme NO to use it. from the older population and a few current mommy and daddies they say the secret weapon is rice cereal in the bottle. i'm glad you asked this because i was wondering the same thing... what does your ped say?

Honestly, cereal in any form, is just practice. A baby's main source of nutrition for the entire first year of his or her life is formula or BM, cereal and all baby food is really just practice so they get used to eating off a spoon.

That's why cereal in the bottle isn't recommended, it doesn't DO anything at all

I did it for DS and currently do it for DD- in both cases it's because of reflux. If it wasn't for reflux, I would never have done it and strictly fed it by spoon.

Some people claim it'll help babies STTN. It's an old wives tale!

ITA!!! they say now it is more of an old wives tale and not needed! They are also trying to change eating n a spoon til later as well closer to the 6 mo than the 4 mo! Def not mandatory for the first year...some even skip it all together and go right to the fruits and veggies...that is what I did at 6 mo for my DCs
