Pumping question
Is there some way to speed up the emptying? My lactation consultant said to continue pumping for about 2 minutes after you stop seeing milk coming out, and that will increase the supply. Well, I've been at this for an hour, and there's still milk coming out! Is there something I can do to speed things up?

Try breast compressions. It helps to empty everything faster. But that seems like a really long time. How much did you pump?

almost 4oz out of one side, and about 3oz out of the other. When I pump for a shorter time, I get about 3 and 2. And this was with doing massage/compressions during the pumping. Maybe not the whole time, but was doing it.

I'm not nursing. I'm pumping because I couldn't take the pain of nursing, but want DS to get my milk.

I think 7 or even 5 ounces is a great amount to pump in one session!!
I was never able to get that much except for first thing in the morning.

As an aside, I would try putting him back on the boob when you are healed - it takes time for them to get used to it, but then they don't hurt at all. Did you nurse your other kids?
An hour seems like too long. I wouldn't pump for more than 20-30 minutes at a time.

If you keep pumping that much you'll end up with a massive oversupply. Sounds like you already have a bit of an oversupply. A newborn normally only take 2 or 3 oz. I would pump for 20 min tops. If you actually need to increase supply which is sounds like you don't, pump more often instead of for longer, it's better for supply
Did you try nursing with a nipple shield? Pumping is super hard and really annypoying, if you can get him to nurse at all I think it will mark your life a little easier, especially with other kids!

Thank you for the advice. I did try a nipple shield but DS would not take it at all; perhaps because it did not fit properly. I realize that I'm getting much more than DS takes per feed, but I'm only pumping every 6 hours, whereas DS is eating every 3. I just can't pump every 3 hours, with 2 other kids and all. I know it will be less work if I can get him to nurse, I just don't know how to make it happen so that I'm not crying through every feeding.

Just trying to help! I hated my pump with a burning passion so that I was basically ready to throw it out the window by the time I was done with it!
See if you can get a hands free nursing bra, than you can at least pump, put the pump on your shoulder and not be tied down to it.
Do you have a pump with a let down button? I could pump faster if I pressed that every time the milk flow started to slow, it would start up faster again. Also, if you put warm packs on your breasts shortly before pumping, it can speed everything up too.

i have to say that pumping every 6 hours wont do anything for your supply at this point.  If you pump every 2-3 hours, 20 minutes long, you will build up your supply and your body will soon respond to the pump more efficiently. it's taking you so long to empty because youre going too long between pumps. it sounds like you have a lot going on! best of luck and congrats!!

I think if you pump at a higher setting (stronger suction) you will empty out quicker. I do this when I pump at work to get as much as possible in a shorter time.

I know you were trying to help, I appreciate all the input. I did go tonight and get one of the hands free bras. I can't carry around my pump, as it is a hospital grade pump, and has no shoulder strap, and is much too heavy. But at least I can feed DS while I pump, or read with DD, etc.
My pump does not have a let down button, but I'll see how things go without that I'm going to try to pump more often.
I too hate the pump, but I hate the pain of nursing even more.

I exclusively pump. I found that after a week or 2 of pumping my milk really starting coming in much more. My DS is 6 weeks old and I get about 10oz each pump and only do it 3 times a day. Feeding my DS at the same time helps me produce more.
I really don't mind pumping and its so much more enjoyable than nursing for me. My older DS has Special needs so I found that it was easier for me to attend to his needs because someone other than me could feed the baby. He has been really jealous and keeps telling me to put "That baby away".

Pumping question
I do 2 sessions a day of pumping (am & pm) for an hour or so each time. I get apprx 10-14oz EACH time. Milk is always coming out but I stop when its just.dripping or flow is weak. My dial is on FULL power...lol

wow thats a good amount of milk!!! i get about 2oz and 1oz or 3oz and 2oz if its been a long stretch.
is your pump on full stregnth?? an hour seems extremely long, i only pump for maybe 10 mins or so.
