Pumping Help Needed
I have been exclusively pumping for about 5 weeks now and am wondering how often I should be pumping? I am using the hospital grade Medela pump. Should it still be every 2 hours? It seems as if my supply is at a standstill and Ryan wants to eat more. Any advice or strategies? How often does everone else pump and for how long at each session?

Re: Pumping Help Needed
In the beginning it's all about supply and demand so if you're supply is low, pump more frequently and/or for longer periods of time. Within a few days your body should respond. I didn't exclusively pump when my daughter was born so I'm not too sure how often you should be pumping, but you should FM Michele31... she's the resident expert on exclusive pumping

Re: Pumping Help Needed
I would say get into a schedule where you pump 3/4 times a day, your supply will regulate itself to whatever you decide to do. I pump 3 times a day, 8/9 am, 6 pm and 11 pm.
I was pumping around 12 oz, 12 oz and maybe 6/8 oz...
So good luck with it!

Re: Pumping Help Needed
If I only pump 3-4 times a day, won't that decrease my supply? I'm only getting about 25 ounces a day. How long do you pump for each time? Another question: since I have been pumping for 6 weeks and have not seen an increase in about 3 weeks, is it possble that my body can't produce any more?

Re: Pumping Help Needed
I think that your supply levels off, so thats probably what is happening. YOu can try Fennel Tea, Fenugreek (3 pills x 3 times a day) and drinking lots of water, that should help increase your supply. I only pump for about 10 minutes, or until my boobs are empty.
It might help also if you called an LC for more help.

I completely agree with Beth. Michele is very helpful and supportive. I exclusively pumped for 11 weeks and it was the hardest thing I ever did. I was lucky enough to get enough milk with less pumping, but my supply did drop off. You should pump everytime your baby is feeding (every 2/3 hours)for about 20 minutes with a double hospital grade pump.

Re: Pumping Help Needed
I am only pumping 3-4 times a day now, and my supply has remained pretty steady. As long as you empty your breasts each time you should be fine. I was told to pump for 2-5 minutes past the last drop of milk that you see come out. Empty breasts replenish themselves more quickly than non-empty ones.
