puerto plata DR

We are going to Puerto Plata in Jan with a bunch of people. We rented a villa & we where really excited about it until we kept hearing from people that its not safe. I know that anything can happen anywhere & I feel that as along as we all stick together we will be fine. Has anyone had any experience there? Worrying that we are not going to be in a safe area is taking all the fun out of it.

I went there with friends a few years ago to an all inclusive. They just said not to really leave the resort... we just did once to do a horse back riding trail with some tour guides who wind up hitting on us the whole time, but that was during the day and next to the resort.

Just don't go venture out where you're staying.

I have been to DR three times and once I left the resort and went to a bar and I highly don't recommend it. I am one who loves to wander all over the place but DR is not somewhere you want to wander around unless you are on a tour with a group of ppl and tour guides or with someone that lives there. Other than that you will have a great time there.

We rented a private house. It comes with "driver". Gosh I hope we will be ok. I'm really nervous about going now.

I just went in July (2nd time there) and I would not recommend leaving the resort UNLESS it is a guided tour or something like that.

First time I went with my girlfriends and we ventured off to a bar with a group of people we met at our resort and people that even worked at the resort and it was shady, we were holding each others hands in the bar basically and would not even go to the bathroom alone.
