PSA: MONEY SCAMMERS SAYING THEY ARE PSEG
PSA: SCAMMERS SAYING THEY ARE PSEG
My husband received a call to his business today from 1-800-490-0025. Caller ID said LIPA. The person he spoke to said that they were from PSEG and were calling to tell him that they would be shutting off the power to his store by 5pm that day. They said something about businesses having a 2 month deposit on their account and he didn’t. He explained he’s been there for 10 years without ever missing a payment and was never told about their change in policy (2 mo deposit) and how could they shut his power without warning. They said they sent certified mail and left stickers on the door about the shut down. He asked to speak to a manager, so they transferred him over to Carlos.
They told him he had to pay close to $900 in dep to keep power going. So he asked for extension and said he would mail a check. They said it would take too long to clear and they’d still have to shut him down, so they gave him the address to the closest PSEG to his business (the address checked out as a real address) but the problem was they were closing and he wouldn’t get there in time.
Carlos was nice enough give him the location of the nearest CVS and said to moneygram them $500 cash so they wouldn’t shut him down. He told him to go to the CVS right away and call him back at 1-866-978-0156 ext. 1530 when he got there so he could walk him through it and tell him what account to send it to.
It was at this moment my husband thought this sounded like a scam. So he googled PSEG and called the number from the site. The guy said he actually did need to put a 2 mo. deposit down but there was absolutely no work order set in place to shut him down and no documentation that they tried to contact him about it. My husband gave the PSEG agent Carlos’ number and asked him to figure this out. My husband then received a call from PSEG and was told it was a scam. They put that number and all info into their system.
LOOK OUT!!! Business owners, home owners, everyone. Check with your elderly parents and neighbors. Your local businesses owned by people who don’t understand english very well. Be aware of these scammers!

Re: PSA: MONEY SCAMMERS SAYING THEY ARE PSEG
Terrible.
But I also don't trust the utility companies in general.
We were out of our house for several months after Sandy and got these ridiculous bills when nothing was even on in our house.
You always need to double and even triple check with them.

PSA: MONEY SCAMMERS SAYING THEY ARE PSEG
I received a call a few weeks ago from someone claiming to be from Con Ed, but the caller I'd said Asia something or other. The guy asked if I received my most recent bill, I informed him that he was a liar, that I knew he wasn't from Con Ed since I don't get a Con Ed bill (my electric is part of my maintenance at my co-op). He hung up at that point.
If you ever have a doubt that someone is not who they say they are, hang up and call the number on your bill. Better safe than sorry!
