Re: PSA: Drowning doesn't look like drowning

I can't access this from work, but I can tell you from first hand experience that drowning is nothing like the way it is depicted on TV or the movies, and that it is very quiet, and hard to decipher between distress and normal pool play.

I posted about it last summer - we were at an office party at a partner's house last summer. There was a small pool. Lots of kids and LOTS of adults and a tiny backyard where everyone was congregating. While there were other children in the pool, and adults meandering about, a 9 year old drowned. One of the adults noticed he was floating face down - pulled him out and started screaming. Of the 30+ people at the party, including the older children in the pool with him, no one noticed that he drowned.

Thank GOD my husband was there, who is trained in CPR and used to be an EMT when he was in Israel. The boy literally turned blue before all of our eyes, but thankfully, after about 5 minutes of CPR, he responded and was rescucitated, with no residual effects.

Of course, Alex was traumatized, and wouldn't even LOOK at a pool for about a year....

Thank you for posting this!

I almost drowned at Wet n Wild in Vegas when I was younger. I was in the wave pool, way too far in the deep end with no raft. The waves got too high for me and a raft floated over me. I was holding on the safety rail but it didn't matter. I was being towed under too far with very short time to get a breath. I swallowed a lot of water. Every time the waves let me come up for literally a second, I tried to call the the life guard that was right above me (talking to girls)

Finally on the third or 4th time, he heard me and pulled me up. My stomach was black and blue and swollen from swallowing so much water, and I was very dizzy. I never did it again! Reading this made me remember it all over again. I barely had breath or time to call to him. I was stuck under water and everyone around me was laughing and having fun. No one heard me calling!

Always be alert!

My son just slipped off the pool steps while I was sitting there (one time he was not wearing his vest, of course). He sank straight to the bottom on his belly. It was very quiet and surreal. no splashing at all.

same thing happened to miki. She was standing on the steps and she slipped. We were all right there and heard a MINIMAL splash, it was NOTHING like on TV
