Protein Shakes
Does anyone still drink protein shakes from the gym juice bar?
I don't ever drink a whole one but my DH does and sometimes I like a little sip of the vanilla/chocolate blueberry. I'm no body buildier but when I see my DH with one, I just die for a taste. I remember mentioning it to my Primary care dr. before TTC and he didn't have a problem with them.
Thanks ladies.

Re: Protein Shakes
I do sometimes. My mom makes me protein shakes when I visit :D It was good for me in the beginning when I couldn't eat meat. The baby needs protein to grow, so I don't think it could be a bad thing, right?

The only negative I can think of would be if the protein powder has artificial sweeteners and you are avoiding those

I don't drink soda so I don't get those artifical sweeteners. When I say I would like some of the protein shake, DH usually saves me a sip or two. That's all. It makes me feel like I'm having a milkshake.

Oh I didn't think of that! I wonder if the one my mom has is really bad. She is kind of an organic nut so maybe it has stevia or something. Good thought though!

Re: Protein Shakes
My DH really wanted me to drink protein shakes in the first tri because I couldn't get meat or other protein products down. We specifically asked my high risk doc and he said it was perfectly fine. Of course, he suggested we read labels and choose a reputable brand and that I don't over do it ie: 5 large protein shakes in a day. I start my morning and end my night with a 10oz shake just about every day.
eta We make them at home - just protein, milk and water. I don't know what the other places put it in. Not that I think it would be bad, I just prefer to monitor the ingredients myself.

What brand do you use? Are you going to continue to drink it in 2nd tri? The XSport brand whey powder is dairy based with limited artificial sweeteners which is what my DH brings home plus he asks for blueberries to be added. Well for me, I just take a sip of his rather than drink a whole one.

Protein Shakes
I miss my protein shakes! My doctor said to stay away from them while prego because they are not regulated by the FDA, and many protein powders contain a certain amount of metal. Hardboiled egg whites for me! I do love Quest protein bars, though. The cookie dough flavor has been a life saver.

I'm obviously not a doc but I really don't think you need to be worried with taking a sip here and there. I'm currently in the second tri and still having my shakes. We're using the MetRx brand right now - it's not my husband's favorits as far as ingredients go but I still have trouble getting some things down so I had to have one where the taste was okay. With regard to the artificial sweetners, a lot of people have coffee with sweetner, candies, soda, etc etc during pregnancy and it seems to be fine. I think as long as it's in moderation, there's no reason to be overly concerned.
